BLISSFUL night, which spoiled the Egyptians, and enriched the Hebrews! Night wherein things of heaven are joined to those of earth. And now we pray thee, O Lord, that our faith, of which this waxen candle consecrated in honor of thy Name is a figure, may never fail to put far from us the darkness of the night of this world. Let it find acceptance before thee as a sweet-smelling savor, and be mingled with the burning lights on high. Let the Bright and Morning Star find it burning when he appeareth. That Morning Star, I say, which shall never know his going down; even he, who coming back again from the lower parts, hath shed abroad his calm light in all mankind. We therefore beseech thee, O Lord, that it may please thee to preserve us thy servants, all the Clergy, and thy faithful people, together with our Bishop N. that we, being guided, governed, and preserved under thy continual protection, may have peaceful times in these our Paschal joys; through the same Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. The Deacon, thereupon, changes his white vestments and puts on those of violet, and joins the Celebrant at the Altar; who, laying aside his cope, puts on a violet chasuble. Then the Prophecies are read aloud (but without titles) by Lectors in the Choir: the Celebrant reading them in a low voice at the Epistle corner of the Altar.

Meanwhile Priests catechize any Catechumens about to be baptized, and prepare them for Baptism.

Genesis 1 and 2.

N the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day. And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it

was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day. And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so. And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. And the evening and the morning were the fifth day. And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so. And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat and it was so. And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day. Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens. And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the Lord
