THE PSALMS OF DAVID AND THE CANTICLES Pointed for Chanting BY THE REV. J. C. JACKSON, M.A. It is indispensable for good chanting that the words should be divided alike by all the singers. In order to attain this, no method is more effective than the use of a Pointed Psalter. It has been the aim of the editors to adapt the words to the chants, as much as possible, in their natural pronunciation and accent; holding, as they do, that good chanting is only a musical way of reading-a sort of measured recitative. To prevent the common fault of stopping short at the end of the reciting note, which has such a bad effect, they have, when necessary, placed an accent on some previous syllable, upon which the reading accent would naturally fall. The change from the reciting note is indicated by a black type: when two syllables are to be sung to the first note of the mediation, they are both printed in that type, and if two or more notes are to be sung to one syllable, two, or more marks are put after the syllable. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving : and shew' ourselves glad in him with Psalms. For the Lord' is a great" God: and' a great King above all gods. In his hand are all the corners of the earth: and the strength of the hills is his" also. The sea is his, and he made it: and his hands' prepared the dry" land. O come, let us worship, and fall" down: and kneel' before the Lord our Maker. For he is the Lord our God: and we are the people of his pasture, and' the sheep" of his hand. To day if ye will hear his voice, hard'en not your hearts as in the provocation, and as in the day' of temptation in the wilderness; : When your fathers tempted me: prov'ed me, and saw my works. Forty years long was I grieved with this generation. and said: It is a people that do err in their hearts, for they have not known my ways.
