XIII. CAPELLA ANTONII EPISCOPI.

Antonius Episcopus, tercio die Installacionis suæ, optulit Magno Altari duos pannos de rubeo samette, brudatos cum historiâ Nativitatis et Passionis Christi ; et unum vestimentum de eodem panno brudato, cum passionibus multorum Martirum in rotundis ortulis [f. rotulis], quorum nomina super capita eorum inscribuntur; et unam albam ejusdem brudaturæ . Item, post mortem ejusdem, habuit Ecclesia [Dunelm.] equos deferentes corpus ejusdem a manerio suo de Eltham usque Dunelmum ; et ex Capellâ ejusdem unam Crucem Patriarchalem argenteam, et deauratam et unum manuale ejusdem operis pro cereo suo in die purificationis, et unam Mitram cum lapidibus ; unum Baculum Pastorale ; annulum; et sandalia; unum thuribulum argenteum et deauratum cum cathenis deauratis ; duo candelabra argentea et deaurata subtilis operis ; et unum candelabrum argenteum et deauratum, in cujus fundo est Ymago Sanctæ

Robert de Stichill, Prior of Finchale, elected Bishop of Durham in 1260 ; died at Arbipellis, in France, on his way home from a General Council at Lyons, in 1274. His heart was brought to Durham, and buried in the Chapter House. A very minute account of the travelling expenses of this prelate, at every resting place in his journey to and from London, in consequence of his election, is preserved, and, as may be imagined, abounds with interest.

2 Robert de Insula, or Holy Island, Prior of Finchale, elected Bishop of Dur. ham in 1274; died at Bishop Middleham 9th June, 1283, and was buried in the Chapter House.

3 Anthony Beck, Archdeacon of Durham, son of Walter Beck, Baron of Eres. by, in Lincolnshire, Bishop of Durhası 9th Jul., 1283.

“ His life was spent in the Court and in the Camp”-attended King Edward I. into Scotland with a large army, under the banner of St. Cuthbert-an Ambassador in Germany in 1292–King of the Isle of Man-Patriarch of Jerusalem-died at Eltham 3rd Mar., 1310- buried in the Nine Altars of Durham Cathedral.

Ego Willielmus le Vavasour miles condo testamentum meum in hunc modum, die Jovis proximè post festum Beati Gregorii Papæ, Anno Domini Millesimo . ccomo undecimo In primis lego animam meam Deo et Beatæ Mariæ, et omnibus Sanctis, et corpus meum ad sepelliendum in Nova Capellâ Sancti Leonardi de Heselwod : et pro mortuario meo meliorem equum meum cum armis ad militem pertinentibus . Item die sepulturæ meæ in distributione pauperum, videlicet cuilibet j.. sexaginta sex libras tresdecim solidos et quatuor denarios, et plus si necesse fuerit . 1 John Fitz Marmaduke, Lord of Horden, in the parish of Easington, descended from a nephew of Bishop Flambard, and the a tres cher Bachelier” of Bishop Beck. Fitz Marmaduke, at the time of his death, was governor of St. John's Town (Perth,] in Scotland, under Edward II., and, according to a custom then not uncommon, his attendants, finding it impossible to comply with that clause in his will which enjoined his sepulture at Durham, literally boiled his dead body in a large cauldron, and preserved his bones till an opportunity of burying them in the Cathedral-yard of Durham presented itself. The whole of this strange proceeding is given in the following singular record enjoining, a penance upon the agents in the transaction, and now for
