APRIL ISt.-LECTURE by Mr. C. J. Duchemin, on "Mendelssohn, his Life, Letters, and Works." In the musical illustrations Mr. Duchemin was assisted by Miss Treadwell and Miss Myra Young. There were 257 members and friends present; a crowded meeting, many others being unable to obtain admission.

APRIL 8th.--DEBATE:

"That the evacuation of Candahar by the British Government is consistent with true Statesmanship, and is a requisite step in the interests of National Morality." Affirmative: Mr. C. C. Smith, Mr. H. O. Jeff, Mr. S. E. Short. Negative: Mr. John Collier, Mr. W. Mountfort, Mr. J. W. Tonks. VotesAffirmative, 13; Negative, 9. 32 members present.

APRIL 22nd.-DEBATE: "That Preaching as an Intellectual and Spiritual Force is not on the Decline." Affirmative: Prof. D. W. Simon, Messrs. F. Taylor, Jacob Thomas, T. Cund. Negative : Messrs. B. McEvoy, R. L. Crosbie, G. Titterton, J. Collier, C. Lean. The meeting was semi-public, 72 members and friends being present. Votes, members only-Affirmative, 24; Negative, Members and friends-Affirmative, 34; Negative, 19.

APRIL 27th.-A JOINT DEBATE was held with the united strength of the Birmingham and Edgbaston Society and the C.L.A. Dr. Malins, President of the B. and E. Society, was in the chair, and nearly 200 members and friends were present. Mr. Councillor H. Payton, President of the C.L.A., opened the debate on the question "That the Irish Land Bill is based upon just principles, and should be accepted by all as a satisfactory attempt to deal with the acknowledged difficulties of Land Tenure in Ireland." He was supported by Mr. E. Deakin, Mr. H. S. Pearson, and Mr. Jas. McClelland. Mr. F. W. Lowe led the debate in the negative, and was supported by Mr. J. W. Tonks, Mr. Pearce, and Mr. T. Watkin Williams. Votes-Affirmative, 87; Negative, 33.

MAY 6th. The last meeting of the Session and fifth of the Evenings with the Poets, was devoted to "John Dryden." "John Dryden." Mr. H. S. Pearson took for his subject the satire "Absolom and Achitophel." Mr. J. Suffield read an essay on Dryden's Plays. Mr. J. W. Tonks concluded with a paper on "The Fables and Odes of Dryden.” 96 members and friends were present.
