PREFACE.

THE

HE most Christian and Catholic practice of praying for the rest and joy of those who have departed this life in the faith and fear of Jesus had become well nigh forgotten, as well as disused, in this land of England, when some forty years ago the life of the Church was revivified, and this, with many other parts of her primitive and rightful inheritance, once more restored. Since that time the progress towards perfect restoration, although slow, has yet been real and actual, and now many thousands amongst us include in their daily devotions, before the Throne of Mercy, intercessions for those who sleep,-for those who were near and dear to them on earth and for those who, in this life they never saw, but yet hope to meet in the glory of Heaven-that they may obtain mercy and pardon and their full consummation of bliss with all the Saints and elect people of God. With a view to the promotion and extension of this pious practice the Guild of All Souls was established some four years since, and its work has
