Of the York Manual, reprinted in this volume, there appear to have been two editions only; one by Wynkyn de Worde, London, 1509, and a second by Gachet, at York, without date. Of the first, five copies are known:-(1) in the Bodleian; (2) in the Library of the Dean and Chapter of Ripon; (3) in that of St. Cuthbert's College, Ushaw; (4) in that of Magdalen College, Cambridge; and a fifth belonging to Mr. Beresford Hope. The Title of this Edition is as follows: Ad laudem Dei et honorem tuamque non immerito, flos virgo Maria, ecce manuale quoddam secundum usum matris ecclesiæ Eboracensis, novis tandem ex repetita perlectione bonaque maturitate elimatum est. It bears no date, but is probably later than 1516, as there is no evidence of Gachet having settled at York before that year. Of this edition the Title is Ad laudem Dei et honorem, tuamque non immerito flos virgo Maria, ecce manuale quoddam secundum usum matris Ecclesiæ Eboracensis novis tandem ex repetita preelectione bonaque maturitate elimatum est. A mendis penitus (mea sententia) alienum, vigiliis lugubrationibus et industria bona ita nunc redactum, correctum et emendatum. Impensis honesti viri Johannis Gachet in civitate Eboracensi moram tenentis. It ends with Explicit manuale ad usum insignis Ecclesiæ Eboracensis ad laudem et honorem Dei. |
