PREFACE.

Of the York Manual, reprinted in this volume, there appear to have been two editions only; one by Wynkyn de Worde, London, 1509, and a second by Gachet, at York, without date.

Of the first, five copies are known :-(1) in the Bodleian; (2) in the Library of the Dean and Chapter of Ripon; (3) in that of St. Cuthbert's College, Ushaw; (4) in that of Magdalen College, Cambridge; and a fifth belonging to Mr. Beresford Hope. The Title of this Edition is as follows:

And the Colophon

Anno Domini millesimo quingentesimo nono quarto ydus Februarii.

Sane hoc volumen digessit arte magister
Wynandus de Worde incola Londonii.

Of the edition by Gachet, a unique copy is preserved in Archbishop Marsh's Library, Dublin, an account of which I owe to the kindness of Robert Travers, Esq., the librarian.

It bears no date, but is probably later than 1516, as there is no evidence of Gachet having settled at York before that year. Of this edition the Title is—

Impensis honesti viri Johannis Gachet in civitate Eboracensi moram tenentis.

It ends with
