ties of the people of the state of New-York, and of the Uni ed States.

Fellow-Citizens-You have in these remarks a clear vie of the principles, by which THE NATIONAL OBSERVER: h been and will continue to be guided. You are all equally terested with us, in sustaining the constitution and laws your country, against the machinations of all self-created, s cret societies. If ONE private society can establish and ex cute laws, affecting the lives and liberties of the people, anot! er and another may do the same thing; and the General ar State governments be thus finally and effectually set at de ance, if not merged in the vortices of private, secret and s created associations. Are you prepared for this? If n encourage us in the stand we have taken, and animate oth Editors, who are honest and independent, to pursue the san course. That the Press should every where take this sta is indispensable to the preservation of your dearest rights: f if ever your government shall be overthrown, the mantle darkness will in the first place envelope the conspirators, at defend them from your grasp, till they have secured ther selves from it, by effecting the destruction of your libertie All associations, therefore, which are not carried on in op day-light, and whose principles and practices are not fair and fully made known to the public, are of dangerous te dency, and sedulously to be guarded against by a free at independent people.

It is for you, fellow-citizens to determine, whether the Ed tor of THE OBSERVER shall, or shall not be, supported in tl STAND he has deliberately and conscientiously assumed.Standing, as he does, on the verge of eternity, to him indivi ually it is of little consequence; but to all those in the mer dian of life, and to our rising progeny, it is a momentous o ject, and one which seriously demands their undivided atte tion, to preserve unimpaired the boon of liberty, which Hea en bestowed upon our fathers; and which they bequeathe to us, in full confidence that we would never prove ungratef to the ORIGINAL and DIVINE DONOR, or disgrace their m mories by a tame surrender of the high privilege at the fo stool of tyranny or usurpation.
