SPEECH, &c.

HAVING ftated my objections fully last year, I should hold myself inexcufable were I now to trefpafs as largely on the indulgence of the committee; I fhall therefore be as short as poffible and avoid the repetition of any thing I have already urged. I am glad that the advocates of the measure have laid afide all thofe high founding general expreffions of consolidating, identifying, and fo forth, which they formerly used instead of argument, and which conveyed no meaning or idea to the understanding. However, instead of perfevering in thofe empty phrases, they have reforted to a new mode, painful to me, as an Irishman, to hear, they degrade the character of their native country, and not content with the most humiliating and unfounded description of it at the present day, they go. back and ranfack history, with a wish to fhew that we are a favage and restless people, devoted to eternal feuds, with uncivilized manners and constant internal broils and jealoufies.
