to be your Lord and judge, how is it to be fuppofed that an apoftate pricft and a profligate rafcal can gain your confidence and influence? your diftempered and ftiff necks and ftony hearts never will fubmit to fo low a humiliation, a fordid faction!

Calv. The veil ftifies and diffipates your fpirit fo that you fee darkly, otherwife you would know the flight of the fpirit; but this is a language you know not, being an Ifraelite.

Luth. If Mofes has the mishap to be an If raelite, I am your elder brother, of the first trumpet of reconciliation, and am at all times ready to judge and decide your fcruples in any manner, caufe, or thing whatsoever; you have therefore liberty to answer for thyself.

Mof. You are permitted by your judge?

Calv. Curfed is he that putteth his truft in man, faith the fcripture. My truft, as a Calvinift, is in the spirit who enlightens and gives us utterance. We form no image or idea whatfoever, therefore ftand unconcerned with material objects or things. Man is an inanimate being, formed out of matter, fenfeless in his inferior man. The fuperior, or fpiritual man, is an independent and intelligent intellectual being, not at all fubject to controul, but to rule. It is this fpiritual fuperiority Calvinifim contends for. Thefe are the children of light, fweet lambs of Sion, inhabitants of New Jerufalem, and heirs of the new covenant, who carry the mark on their foreheads of spiritual virginity, and fing a new canticle which no other can fing or understand. Luth. I hope, Mr. Mofes, we have fully explained our tenets in our fpiritual warfare, too convincing to admit of a doubt, the ne. ceffity of taking the reins of government, excommunicating the pope, and placing our father Luther in the chair of Peter; and that after every lenient and perfuafive means proved abortive,

abortive, to bring Calvin and his fchifmatical and heretical adherents to the unity of the church and chair of St. Peter, he found it neceffary, by the fword of the spirit, to cut them off as an infected branch, and accordingly excommunicated them.

Mof. From whence, and who conferred that power or authority to Luther, or any of his pretended reformation? He was, and ftands condemned this day, with his whole brood, or affociation. Their condemnation is the joint voice of the church and their general council, eftablished and authorifed by Jefus Chrift, who you confefs to be your Ghoft; therefore you affuredly ftand condemned by your God. You have agreed to try your right of fovereignty with me, and I decide as you have fet forth your cafe; decide on me also with candour,

Calv. I fhall faint and not be able to digeft my dinner, if I hold forth longer, I fill my ftomach with wind, and fhall die with the cholic.

Mof, I bid adieu. A fecond part of the fame tune, a fhoulder of Brawn faufages, bloodpuddings, mince-pies and a large peas-pudding, the leg boiled with cabbages, all for two giut, tons, enough for a troop of French horse. Well you may become two facks of greafe. Adieu.

THIRD CONFERENCE.

Mers. Luther and Calvin to Rabbi Mofes,

greeting.

WE are your debtors, and have all faith by

trial, that your admonitions are a fore knowledge of the prophetic fpirit, inherited from your ancestry, the old prophets; we admire the refemblance you bear to the prophet Micah, who prophecied and foretold the death of Ahab, king of Ifrael. When 400 falfe prophets favoured the king's defign, Micah with the voice of truth gainfaid them and foretold the king's death. He was what the world terms harf, and ill-favour'd; you are the fame; but his harfhnefs would have faved the king's life and reputation, had he followed his counfel; in like fort we fhould have been freed from the most cruel relapfe that ever mortal man fuftained, had we attended to your prophecy. About fix hours after your departure a moft violent eruption broke forth from our upper and lower man, and manifefled itfelf in the unheard-of extortions this conflict, or rather hard fight or convulfions continued with moft violent agonies for the fpace of fix hours, when the ftorm abated, and a total weakness, feeblenefs, faintnefs and imbecility of the whole man fuccceded, and it was not but with great care and attention, taking proper medicines to fupport, keep up, fuftain, manage, fet free, by proper restoratives, the manhood

to its original, vigorous, and refplendent flate, we now are thankful and count the minutes until you will vouchfafe us to another conference, wherin we may farther, and with more fullnefs, expatiate and unfold our hearts and fentiments to each other. We venerate truth, honefty, and candour, wherever we can find thofe bleffings, and thefe encomiums are due to none more than yourself.

We are, with due deference,

LUTHER and CALVIN.

Mofes to Mers. Luther and Calvin.

As it is your wish to have my farther thoughts on your fpiritual warfare, I will at tend you to-morrow morning at ten precifely, touching your encomiums.. They are loft on one that requires nothing, either praife or difpraife, what I am. I wish to be known to all. It is in vain to require from others what our deferts cannot meriti deferts

Mof. What matter would you defire to explicate on?

Luth, & Calv. We would wifh to make our feparation from the church of Rome appear to you in the light it does to us, deftitute of grace and falvation.

Mof. Many charges must be proved to justify your affertion...

Luth, & Caly, This we are ready to do.

Mof.
