the builders refused is become the chief corner stone. This is the Lord's doing; and it is marvellous in our eyes. This is the day which the Lord hath made ; we will rejoice and be glad in it. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; God is the Lord who has fhewn us light.
Mojes. David is, and ever was, revered and honoured by Israel, as the darling of his God, and father of their Messiah. And the Almighty pronounced these blesings, but the law was given to Moses, for the rule a 1 guide of Israel; therefore, unless I am convicted by the five books, wrote by our legislator, of error, I am bound to remain a member of the original covenant, known to be by the exprefs command of the Almighty, and positively enjoined.
Boy. As your desire in this meeting is to search out the will of the Almighty God, and his divine Truths, it will be proper to divest yourself of all prejudice and partiality, and with an heroic refolution to embrace what your reason affents to without contradiction ; but in this great matter your whole confidence must be immoveably fixed on your God. In the latt conference there were some texts quoted which were not discuffed in Genesis, which we will, if you please, examine. Genesis ift chapter. In the beginning God created the Heavens and the earth: and the earth was without form, and void, and darkness was on the face of the deep: and the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the war ters. 1 beg your explanation, who is this Spirit of God, marked out distinct and clear?
Mofes. Majes. God is a Spirit and cannot suffer parts.
Boy. God created, and the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. It is molt positive and absolute, by this scripture, that God, and the Spirit, are distinct persons; but God, producing the Spirit, is one substance, consequently one God.
Moses. As I observed in our last, there is no diving into the depth of the Divinity.
Boy. The Godhead is infinite, and our conceprions weals and limitted to a very insignificancy; yet, when his Majesty is pleased to communicate his secrets and reveal his truths, it is the duty of his creature to embrace them, and subinit with joy and perfect obedience; the reverse proceeds from what Almighty God repeatedly charged Israel with, an obdurate and flinty heart.
Mofes. I confess, to the confusion of Israel, what you advance; but these repeated admonitions were, when Israel fell from their allegiance and went aside from the law and commandments.
Boy. The law was binding and obligatory, until the Melliah.
Mofes. Moses, whom God Almighty appointed our law-giver, gave Ifrael charge to obey the Melliah. And the Lord your God shall raise you up a prophet from the midst of those of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him shall you hearken, according to 'all thou defiredst of the Lord thy God in Horeb, in the day of the assembly, saying, " let me not hear
again the voice of the Lord my God, neither jer me see this greit fire any more, that I die not.” And the Lord said unto me, They have well spoken, I will raise them a prophet from among their brethrin, like unto thee, and will put my words in bis mouth, and he mall speak unto them all tlat I fall command him, and it shall come to pass, that whafever will not hearken to my words, which be all speak in My Name, I will requirit of him. Deut. 18th chapter. Boy. Pray what do you infer froin this
Moses. A positive injonction, enjoined by the great legislator, and express order of the Almighty God; therefore of equal weight and authority with the other commandinenis.
Boy. I will be the most eliginlę method for to discuss each article before we proceed to another ; we will return to our firft. The Di. vinity, the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
Mofes. Here o Israel, the Lord your God is one God; I cannot therefore admit the plural; but mult, as Ifrael ever have done, confess the singular number in God. The Spirit of God distinctly expressed, favours christianity, but a single verse must favour some other meaning, and give the precedency to the commandment.
Boy. This revelation of the most transcending mystery, the knowled e of which will remove the partition wall és rock of offence, that separates Israel from chriftianity, must not he pailed over ; you will therefore give your ex
planation on this matter of infinite importance, the Spirit of God moved upon the deep.
Mofes. The mystery of the Divinity is infinite, therefore cannot be brought within the superficial knowledge of the creature ; it would theresore be proper to discuss some other article, which may explain by degrees, and remove seeming irreconcileable texts.
Boy. The divinity is the ground and basis of the two covenants; until this fundamental and prime article is reconciled, the two covenants never will be brought to agreement.
Mofes. My desire is truth ; but, touching this tremenduous mystery, niy nature recoils, and shrinks into my base nothingness; my soul as an outcast is filled with horror; I dread the thought.
Boy. It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God; this is scripture, and it is to avoid this dreadful catastrophe that we meet this day, and it is with confidence I embrace this conference purely, as I have no other will but to be directed by the divine mercy, and that his truth may appear; I will therefore proceed with the ift chapter of Genesis. The Spirit of God moved upon the face of the deep; and God said, let us make man in our image, after our likeness.
Moses. Almighty God speaks in this chapter, both in the fingular and plural number' ; it will be proper to proceed in order, to assist ourselves with proper lights, by proceeding next to the article of the Meffiah.
Boy. The 3d. chapter of Genesis. The Almighty promises redemption to man after his fall, by the Mesah: it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Mofes. Satan with his association, after their fall, perceiving the creation of man was to replace and fill their vacant seats, plotted their fall, and bring them upon a level with themfelves ; to obtain their purpose, Satan assumes, or enters into a serpent, by which stratagem decoyed Eve to a breach of her duty, and abuse of free will. Adam falling into the same act of disobedience, entailed an everlasting curse on their pofterity; for the offence was not against the creature, which would have been in their power to have made reftitution : but it was in open violation to the immediate commandment of the Creator, which rendered it needful to have a Meffiah to reconcile them; and this reconcilement is promised to the whole stock of Adam that will accept this grace, and join Israel under the banner of their king.
Boy. We will confine ourselves without variation in the search of your Messiah; you grant his appearing necessary for the reconcilement of man to his Creator ; you also grant the promise is to the whole stock of Adam.
Moses. All what you assert, I agree to, but with this singular privilege to Israel, that he will be flesh of our Aesh, and bone of our bone, and that he will be born of the stock of David, and inherit his throne; and that Ifrael will polsess every blessing under him according to the prophecies.
