THE present edition of this work having undergone so complete a revisal as to give it an appear. ance very different from that of the former impressions, the editors think it proper to explain the object for which the revisal was undertaken.

At the time when this work was first published in English, the necessity of a strict adherence to the original was not generally felt; and it is well known that the early translations of the Writings of Baron Swedenborg, though they give the general sense of the original with sufficient clearness, are yet, for the most part, too diffuse and paraphrastical to convey those particular, precise, and correct ideas of the subjects treated of, which their importance requirės, and which are so evidently intended to be conveyed by the simple and perspicuous language, and carefully appropriated terms, of th: enlightened author. To bring the translation as close as possible to the original Latin, has therefore been the object of the alterations ihat have been made in the present edition : and the accomplishment of this has chiefly been attempted by retrenching exuberances, and preserving a greater uniformity in the rendering of peculiar expressions.
