In this edition two imaginative artists have simply taken the poems of Quarles upon an independent basis, and illustrated them with figures and emblematical devices more in accordance with the spirit of the present age, the temper of the Church of England, and the development of Protestant art. Quaintness, however, has not been altogether excluded, for without a spice of that element it could hardly be said that so quaint a writer as Quarles had been illustrated at all; but a tone has been given to the thoughts and ingenious conceits of the Poet which would not have been possible in the epoch in which he wrote.
