22 Repens-toi donc de cette méchanceté, et prie Dieu, afin que, s'il est possible, cette pensée de ton cœur te soit pardonnée.

23 Car je vois que tu es dans un fiel très-amer, et dans les liens de l'iniquité.

24 Alors Simon répondit et leur dit: Priez vous-mêmes le Seigneur pour moi, afin qu'il ne m'arrive rien de ce que vous avez dit.

25 Eux donc, après avoir ainsi rendu témoignage à la parole du Seigneur, et l'avoir annoncée, retournèrent à Jérusalem, et prêchèrent l'évangile en plusieurs bourgs des Samaritains.

26 Et un ange du Seigneur parla à Philippe, et lui dit: Lève-toi, et va du côté du midi, sur le chemin qui descend de Jérusalem à Gaza, la déserte.

27 Et il se leva, et s'en alla. Or un Ethiopien, eunuque, qui étoit un puissant Seigneur à la cour de Candace, reine d'Ethiopie, surintendant de tous ses trésors, étoit venu à Jérusalem, pour adorer Dieu.

28 Comme il s'en retournoit, étant assis dans son chariot, il lisoit le prophète Esaïe.

29 Alors l'Esprit dit à Philippe: Approche-toi, et joins ce chariot.

30 Et Philippe accourut, et entendit qu'il lisoit le prophète Esaïe. Et il lui dit: Entends-tu bien ce que tu lis?

31 Il lui répondit: Et comment le pourrois-je entendre, si quelqu'un ne me guide? Et il pria Philippe de monter, et de s'asseoir auprès de lui.

32 Or le passage de l'Ecriture qu'il lisoit étoit celui-ci : Il a été

27 And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,

28 Was returning: and, sitting in his chariot, read Esaias the prophet.

29 Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.

30 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?

31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit

with him.

32 The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was

35 Là-dessus Philippe prenant la parole, et commençant par cet endroit de l'Ecriture, il lui annonça Jésus.

36 Et comme ils alloient par chemin, ils arrivèrent à un endroit où il y avoit de l'eau ; et l'eunuque dit: Voici de l'eau ; qu'estce qui empêche que je ne sois baptisé ?

37 Et Philippe lui dit: Si tu crois de tout ton coeur, cela t'est permis. Et l'eunuque répondant, dit: Je crois que Jésus-Christ est

le Fils de Dieu.

38 Et il commanda qu'on arrêtât le chariot; et ils descendirent tous deux dans l'eau, Philippe et l'eunuque, et Philippe le baptisa.

39 Et quand ils furent remontés hors de l'eau, l'Esprit du Seigneur enleva Philippe, et l'eunuque ne le vit plus; et il continua son chemin plein de joie.

40 Mais Philippe se trouva dans Azot; et il annonça l'évangile par toutes les villes où il passa, jusqu'à ce qu'il vînt à Césaree.

33 In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.

34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other

man?

35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.

36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?

37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is

the Son of God.

38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.

40 But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through, he preached in all the cities, till he came to Cesarea.

CHAP. IX.

CEPENDANT Saul, ne respi

rant toujours que menaces et que carnage contre les disciples du Seigneur, s'adressa au souverain sacrificateur;

2 Et il lui demanda des lettres

pour les synagogues de Damas; afin que s'il trouvoit quelques personnes de cette secte, hommes ou femmes, il les amenât liés à Jérusalem.

3 Et comme il étoit en chemin, et qu'il approchoit de Damas, tout d'un coup une lumière venant du ciel resplendit comme un éclair autour de lui.

4 Et étant tombé par terre, il entendit une voix qui lui dit: Saul, Saul, pourquoi me persécutes-tu ?

5 Et il répondit: Qui es-tu, Seigneur? Et le Seigneur lui dit: Je suis Jésus, que tu persécutes; il te seroit dur de regimber contre les aiguillons.

6 Alors, tout tremblant et effrayé, il dit: Seigneur, que veuxtu que je fasse? Et le Seigneur lui dit: Lève-toi, et entre dans la ville, et là on te dira ce qu'il faut que tu fasses.

7 Or les hommes qui faisoient le voyage avec lui s'arrêtèrent tout épouvantés, entendant bien une voix, mais ne voyant per

8 Et Saul se leva de terre, et ayant ouvert les yeux, il ne voyoit personne; de sorte qu'ils le conduisirent par la main, et le menèrent à Damas,

9 Où il fut trois jours, sans voir, et sans manger ni boire.

CHAP. IX.

Saul's miraculous conversion.

AND Saul, yet breathing out

threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of Lord, went unto the high priest,

2 And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.

3 And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven :

4 And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

5 And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

6 And he trembling and astonished, said, Lord what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.

7 And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing

10 Il y avoit alors à Damas un disciple, nommé Ananias, à qui le Seigneur dit dans une vision: Ananias, et il répondit: me voici, Seigneur.

11 Et le Seigneur lui dit: Lèvetoi, et t'en va dans la rue qu'on appelle la rue droite, et cherche dans la maison de Judas un nommé Saul, de Tarse; car il est présentement en prières.

12 (Au même tems Saul vit en vision un homme nommé Ananias, qui entroit, et qui lui imposoit les mains, afin qu'il recouvrât la vue.)

13 Ananias répondit: gneur, j'ai ouï dire à plusieurs personnes, combien cet homme a fait de maux à tes Saints dans Jérusalem.

14 Il est même ici, avec pouvoir, de la part des principaux sacrificateurs, de lier tous ceux qui invoquent ton nom.

15 Mais le Seigneur lui dit : Va; car cet homme est un instrument que j'ai choisi, pour porter 'mon nom devant les Gentils, devant les rois, et devant les enfans d'Israël ;

16 Et je lui montrerai combien il faudra qu'il souffre pour mon

nom.

17 Ananias donc s'en alla, et étant entré dans la maison, il lui imposa les mains et lui dit: Saul mon frère, le Seigneur Jésus, qui t'est apparu dans le chemin par où tu venois, m'a envoyé, afin que tu recouvres la vue; et que ta sois rempli du Saint-Esprit.

18 Et aussitôt il tomba de ses yeux comme des écailles, et à l'instant il recouvra la vue; puis il se leva, et il fut baptisé.

19 Et ayant mangé il reprit ses forces. Et Saul fut quelques jours

10 And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias and to him said the Lord in a vision, Ananias. And he said, Behold, I am here, Lord.

11 And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight, and inquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul of Tarsus: for, behold, he prayeth,

12 And hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in, and putting his hand him, that he might receive his sight,

13 Then Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard by many of this man, how much evil he hath done to thy saints at Jerusalem:

14 And here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call on thy

name.

15 But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:

16 For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name's sake.

17 And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.

18 And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales; and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized.

19 And when he had received meat, he was strengthened. Then

22 Mais Saul se fortifioit de plus en plus, et il confondoit les Juifs qui habitoient à Damas, démontrant que Jésus étoit le Christ.

23 Quelque tems après, les Juifs délibérèrent de faire mourir Saul.

24 Mais il fut averti de leur complot. Or ils gardoient les portes de la ville jour et nuit, pour le faire mourir.

25 Mais les disciples le prenant pendant la nuit, le descendirent par la muraille dans une beille.

26 Et quand Saul fut arrivé à Jérusalem, il tâchoit de se joindre aux disciples; mais tous le craignoient, ne croyant pas qu'il fût un disciple.

27 Mais Barnabas le prit et le mena aux apôtres, et leur raconta comment le Seigneur lui étoit apparu sur le chemin, et lui avoit parlé; et comment il avoit parlé ouvertement à Damas au nom de Jésus.

28 Ainsi il alloit et venoit avec eux dans Jérusalem;

29 Et parlant avec hardiesse au nom du Seigneur Jésus, il parloit et disputoit avec les Grecs; mais ils tâchoient de lui ôter la vie.

20 And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God.

21 But all that heard him were amazed, and said, Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this name in Jerusalem, and came hither for that intent, that he might bring them bound unto the chief priests?

22 But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving that this is very Christ.

23 And after that many days were fulfilled, the Jews took counsel to kill him.

24 But their laying await was known of Saul. And they watched the gates day and night, to kill him.

25 Then the disciples took him by night, and let him down by the wall, in a basket.

26 And when Saul was come to Jerusalem, he assayed to join himself to the disciples: but they were all afraid of him, and believed not that he was a disciple.

27 But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and declared unto them how he had seen the Lord in the way, and that he had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus.

28 And he was with them coming in and going out at Jerusalem.

29 And he spake boldly in the name of the Lord Jesus, and disputed against the Grecians: but they went about to slay him.
