8 Ils traversèrent ensuite la Mysie, et descendirent à Troas.

9 Et Paul eut une vision pendant la nuit: Un homme Macédonien se présenta devant lui, et le pria, disant: Passe en Macédoine, et viens nous secourir.

10 Aussitôt qu'il eut vu cette vision, nous nous disposâmes à passer en Macédoine, concluant de là que le Seigneur nous y appeloit, pour leur annoncer l'évangile.

11 Etant donc partis de Troas, nous tirâmes droit vers Samothrace, et le lendemain à Néapolis;

12 Et de là à Philippes, qui est la première ville de ce quartier de la Macédoine, et une colonie Romaine; et nous y séjournâmes quelques jours.

13 Le jour du sabbat nous sortîmes de la ville, et nous allâmes près de la rivière, où l'on avoit accoutumé de faire la prière; et nous étant assis, nous parlions aux femmes qui s'y étoient assemblées.

14 Et une certaine femme nommée Lydie, de la ville de Thyatire, marchande de pourpre, qui craignoit Dieu, nous écouta; et le Seigneur lui ouvrit le cœur, pour faire attention aux choses que Paul disoit.

15 Et quand elle eut été baptisée avec sa famille, elle nous fit cette prière: Si vous m'avez cru fidèle au Seigneur, entrez dans ma maison et y demeurez; et elle nous y obligea.

16 Or un jour que nous allions à la prière, une servante qui avoit un esprit de Python, et qui apportoit un grand profit à

8 And they passing by Mysia, came down to Troas.

9 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us.

10 And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them.

11 Therefore loosing from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothracia, and the next day to Neapolis;

12 And from thence to Philippi, which is the chief city of that part of Macedonia, and a colony. And we were in that city abiding certain days.

13 And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither.

14 And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.

15 And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house and abide there. And she constrained us.

16 And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her

19 Mais ses maîtres, voyant qu'ils avoient perdu l'espérance de leur gain, se saisirent de Paul et de Silas, et les traînèrent à la place publique devant les magis

trats.

20 Et ils les présentèrent aux magistrats, et leur dirent: Ces hommes-ci, qui sont Juifs, troublent notre ville;

21 Et ils enseignent une manière de vivre, qu'il ne nous est pas permis de recevoir, ni de suivre, à nous qui sommes Romains.

22 Et le peuple en foule s'éleva contre eux, et les magistrats ayant fait déchirer leurs robes, ordonnèrent qu'ils fussent battus de verges.

23 Et après qu'on leur eut donné plusieurs coups, ils les firent mettre en prison; et ils ordonnèrent au geolier de les garder sûrement.

24 Ayant reçu cet ordre, il les mit au fond de la prison, et leur serra les pieds dans des

entraves.

25 Sur le minuit, Paul et Silas étant en prières chantoient les louanges de Dieu, et les prisonniers les entendoient.

26 Et tout d'un coup il se fit un grand tremblement de terre; en sorte que les fondemens de la pri

17 The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.

18 And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, 1 command thee in the name of Jesus Christ, to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.

19 And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the market-place, unto the rulers,

20 And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city,

21 And teach customs which are not lawful for us to re ceive, neither to observe, being Romans.

22 And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them.

23 And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailer to keep them safely:

24 Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.

25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.

27 Alors le geolier étant réveillé, et voyant les portes de la prison ouvertes, tira son épée et alloit se tuer, croyant que les prisonniers s'étoient s'étoient sauvés.

28 Mais Paul lui cria à haute voix: Ne te fais point de mal;

nous sommes tous ici.

29 Alors le geolier ayant demandé de la lumière, entra promptement, et tout tremblant il se jeta aux pieds de Paul et de Silas.

30 Et les ayant menés dehors, il leur dit: Seigneurs, que faut-il que je fasse pour être sauvé?

31 Ils lui dirent: Crois au Seigneur Jésus-Christ, et tu seras sauvé, toi et ta famille.

32 Et ils lui annoncèrent la parole du Seigneur, et à tous ceux qui étoient dans sa maison.

33 Et les ayant pris à cette même heure de la nuit, il lava leurs plaies; et aussitôt il fut baptisé, lui et tous les siens.

34 Et les ayant menés dans son logement, il leur fit servir à manger; et il se réjouit de ce qu'il avoit cru en Dieu, avec toute sa famille.

35 Le jour étant venu, les magistrats envoyèrent des sergens, pour dire au geolier: Laisse aller ces gens-là.

36 Aussitôt le geolier rapporta ces paroles à Paul, et lui dit: Les magistrats ont envoyé dire qu'on vous laissât aller: Sortez donc maintenant, et vous en allez en paix.

37 Mais Paul dit aux sergens: Après nous avoir battus de verges publiquement, sans forme de jugement, nous qui sommes Ro

were shaken and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed.

27 And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled.

28 But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm; for we are all here.

29 Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas;

30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?

31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

32 And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.

33 And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.

34 And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God, with all his house.

35 And when it was day, the magistrates sent the serjeants, saying, Let those men go.

36 And the keeper of the prison told this saying to Paul, The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore depart, and go in

39 C'est pourquoi ils vinrent vers eux et leur firent des excuses, et les ayant mis hors de la prison, ils les prièrent de se retirer de la ville.

40 Et eux étant sortis de la prison, entrèrent chez Lydie; et ayant vu les frères, ils les consolèrent, et ensuite ils partirent.

2 Et Paul, selon sa coutume, entra vers eux, et il les entretint des Ecritures pendant trois jours de sabbat ;

3 Leur découvrant et leur faisant voir qu'il avoit fallu que le Christ souffrît, et qu'il ressuscitât des morts; et ce Christ, leur disoitil, est Jésus que je vous annonce.

4 Et quelques-uns d'entre eux crurent, et se joignirent à Paul et à Silas, comme aussi une grande multitude de Grecs craignant Dieu, et plusieurs femmes de qualité.

5 Mais les Juifs incrédules, étant émus d'envie, prirent avec eux quelques hommes méchans et fainéans; et ayant excité un tu

and now do they thrust us out privily? nay verily; but let them come themselves and fetch us out.

38 And the serjeants told these words unto the magistrates: and they feared, when they heard that they were Romans.

39 And they came and besought them, and brought them out, and desired them to depart out of the city.

40 And they went out of the prison, and entered into the house of Lydia: and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them, and departed.

CHAP. XVII.

Paul preacheth at Thessalonica.

NOW when they had passed

through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:

2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath-days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,

3 Opening and alledging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.

4 And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.

5 But the Jews which be lieved not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and

multe, ils troublèrent toute la ville, et faisant violence à la maison de Jason, ils cherchoient Paul et Silas pour les mener vers le peuple.

6 Mais ne les y ayant pas trouvés, ils traînèrent Jason et quelques-uns des frères devant les magistrats de la ville, en criant: Ces gens, qui ont troublé tout le monde, sont aussi venus ici.

7 Et Jason les a reçus chez lui; et ils sont tous rebelles aux ordonnances de César, en disant, qu'il y a un autre roi, qu'ils nomment Jésus.

8 Ils émurent donc la populace, et même les magistrats de la ville, qui les écoutèrent.

9 Mais ayant reçu caution de Jason et des autres, ils les laissèrent aller.

10 Et incontinent les frères firent partir de nuit Paul et Silas pour aller à Bérée; où étant arrivés, ils entrèrent dans la synagogue des Juifs.

11 Ceux-ci eurent des sentimens plus nobles que ceux de Thessalonique, et ils reçurent la parole avec beaucoup de promptitude, examinant tous les jours les Ecritures, pour savoir si ce qu' u'on leur disoit y étoit conforme,

12 Plusieurs donc d'entre eux crurent, et des femmes Grecques de qualité, et des hommes en assez grand nombre.

13 Mais quand les Juifs de Thessalonique surent que la parole de Dieu étoit annoncée à Bérée par Paul, ils y vinrent, et émurent le peuple.

14 Et aussitôt les frères en firent sortir Paul, comme pour aller du côté de la mer; mais Silas et Timothée demeurèrent encore à Bérée.

15 Et ceux qui s'étoient char

gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.

6 And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down, are come hither also;

7 Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Cesar, saying, that there is another king, one Jesus.

8 And they troubled the people, and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.

9 And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.

10 And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither, went into the synagogue

of the Jews.

11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and and searched the Scriptures daily, whether those things were

so.

12 Therefore many of them believed: also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.

13 But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.

14 And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul, to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still.
