16 Pendant que Paul les attendoit à Athènes, il avoit le cœur outré, en voyant cette ville toute plongée dans l'idolâtrie.

17 Il s'entretenoit donc dans la synagogue avec les Juifs et avec ceux qui craignoient Dieu, et tous les jours dans la place, avec ceux qui s'y rencontroient.

18 Et quelques philosophes Epicuriens et Stoïciens conférèrent avec lui; et les uns disoient : Que veut dire ce discoureur? Et les autres disoient: Il semble qu'il annonce des divinités étrangères; c'étoit parcequ'il leur annonçoit Jésus et la résurrection.

19 Et l'ayant pris, ils le menèrent à l'Areopage, en lui disant: Pourrions-nous savoir quelle est cette nouvelle doctrine que tu annonces?

20 Car nous t'entendons dire certaines choses fort étranges; nous voudrions donc bien savoir ce que c'est.

21 Or tous les Athéniens et les étrangers qui demeuroient à Athènes ne s'occupoient qu'à dire et à écouter quelque nouvelle.

22 Alors Paul se tenant au milieu de l'Aréopage, dit: Hommes Athéniens, je remarque qu'en toutes choses vous êtes, pour ainsi dire, dévots jusqu'à l'excès.

23 Car en passant et en regar dant vos divinités, j'ai trouvé même un autel sur lequel il y a cette inscription: AU DIEU INCONNU. Celui donc que vous honorez, sans le connoître, c'est celui que je vous annonce.

Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed.

16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the eity wholly given to idolatry.

17 Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.

18 Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoics, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.

19 And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?

20 For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.

21 (For all the Athenians, and strangers which were there, spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell or to hear some new thing.)

22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' Hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.

23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto

you.

24 Le Dieu qui a fait le monde et toutes les choses qui y sont, étant le Seigneur du ciel et de la terre, n'habite point dans les temples bâtis par. la main des hommes.

25 Il n'est point servi par les mains des hommes, comme s'il avoit besoin de quoi que ce soit, lui qui donne à tous, la vie, la respiration, et toutes choses.

26 Il a fait naître d'un seul sang tout le genre humain, pour habiter sur toute l'étendue de la terre, ayant déterminé les tems précis et les bornes de leur habitation;

27 Afin qu'ils cherchent le Seigneur, et qu'ils puissent comme le toucher de la main et le trouver, quoiqu'il ne soit pas loin de chacun de nous.

28 Car c'est par lui que nous avons la vie, le mouvement et l'être; selon que quelques-uns de vos poëtes ont dit: Que nous sommes aussi la race de Dieu.

29 Etant donc la race de Dieu, nous ne devons pas croire que la divinité soit semblable à de l'or, ou à de l'argent, ou à de la pierre, taillée par l'art et l'industrie des hommes.

30 Dieu donc ayant laissé passer ces tems d'ignorance, annonce maintenant à tous les hommes en tous lieux, qu'ils se convertissent.

31 Parcequ'il a arrêté un jour, auquel il doit juger le monde avec justice, par l'homme qu'il a établi pour cela, de quoi il a donné à tous les hommes une preuve certaine, en le ressuscitant des

morts.

32 Et quand ils entendirent parler de la résurrection des morts, les uns s'en moquèrent ; et les autres dirent: Nous t'entendrons là-dessus une autre fois.

24 God that made the world, and all things and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

25 Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing; seeing he giveth to all, life, and breath, and all things;

26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men, for to dwell on all the face of the earth; and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us :

28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.

30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at, but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness, by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

32 And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked; and others said, We will hear thee again of this

2 And found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla; (because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome ;) and came unto them.

3 And because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were tent-makers.

4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks.

5 And when Silas and Timotheus were come from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in the spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ.

6 And when they opposed themselves, and blasphemed, he shook his raiment, and said unto them, Your blood be upon your own heads; I am clean: from henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles.

7 And he departed thence, and entered into a certain man's house, named Justus, one that worshipped God, whose house joined hard to the synagogue.

13 En disant: Celui-ci veut persuader aux hommes de servir Dieu d'une manière contraire à la loi.

14 Et comme Paul alloit ouvrir la bouche pour parler, Gallion dit aux Juifs: S'il s'agissoit, ô Juifs, de quelque injustice, ou de quelque crime, je vous écouterois patiemment, autant qu'il seroit raisonnable;

15 Mais s'il est question de disputes de mots, et de noms, et de votre loi, vous y pourvoirez vous-mêmes; car je ne veux point être juge de ces choses.

16 Et il les fit retirer du tribunal.

15 But if it be a question of words and names, and of your law, look ye to it; for I will be no judge of such matters.

16 And he drave them from the judgment-seat.

17 Then all the Greeks took Sosthenes, the chief ruler of the synagogue, and beat him before. the judgment-seat. And Gallie cared for none of those things.

18 And Paul after this tarried there yet a good while, and then took his leave of the brethren, and sailed thence into Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila; having shorn his head

24 En ce tems-là, un Juif, nommé Apollos, natif d'Alexandrie, homme éloquent et puissant dans les Ecritures, arriva à Ephèse. 25 Il étoit en quelque sorte instruit dans la voie du Seigneur; il parloit avec ferveur d'esprit, et enseignoit soigneusement ce qui regardoit le Seigneur, bien qu'il n'eût connoissance que du baptême de Jean.

26 Il commença donc à parler hardiment dans la synagogue. Et quand Aquilas et Priscille l'eurent ouï, ils le prirent avec eux, et l'instruisirent plus exactement de la voie de Dieu.

27 Et comme il vouloit passer en Achaïe, les frères qui l'y avoient exhorté écrivirent aux disciples de le recevoir. Quand il y fut arrivé, il servit beaucoup, par la grace de Dieu, à ceux qui avoient cru;

21 But bade them farewell, saying, I must by all means keep this feast that cometh in Jerusalem: but I will return again unto you, if God will. And he sailed from Ephesus.

27 And when he was disposed to pass into Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him: who, when he was come, helped them much which had believed through grace:
