PREFACE. MANY apologies are due to an indulgent public for the tardy appearance of the third and concluding volume of the First Series of the "Lives of the Queens of England." The cause of this delay will be best explained by a letter which I had the honour of receiving from his Excellency Monsieur Guizot in May last, and which I avail myself of his courteous permission to publish, as affording not only a cogent reason for the postponement of the present volume, but a testimonial of those preceding it, of which I can scarcely be too proud.
