THE WILL OF JOHN HOPTON, BISHOP OF NORWICH.

The xxiiijth daye of Auguste 1558, the vth and vjth yeres of Kinge Phillipp and Quene Marye. John Hopton, by the permission of God, Bishopp of Norwiche. My body to be buryed within the Cathedrall churche of Norwiche. I give v li. to buye some decent ornamente aboute the blessed Sacramente of thaulter in the saide Cathedrall churche. I will that my myter and pastorall staffe shalbe restored wth moste humble thankes unto the quenes hieghnes whome or

Lorde God longe preserve over us wth or noble Kinge Philipp. And that the sayed myter and pastorall staffe shalbe restored unto her Maties Juell howse, where recorde ys made of myne owne hande and the same to be enrolled. Item I will that the greate Byble in Latyne of Robte Stevensons prynte gylted, the new Testamente in Greke gilted, the byble in Greke, a greate volume gilted, Aristophanes cu' comentariis in Greke gilted, and Speculu' Passionis Xpi shall also be delyvered unto her hieghnes, wiche bokes I did receyve from the Maties Library savinge Speculu' Passionis Xpi, wich I did borowe of her grace at another tyme. Item I geve unto my sister Sibell Hopton xx li., yf she be alyve, to my brother Pulforth v li., to the parishe churche of Leedes in Yorkeshyre a cope of tawnye velat wth offres of gold and the storye of the Passion of Christe sette in paynes aboute the same. Item I geve to Xpofer Hopton of Leedes my chales dubyll gilte, a standinge cuppe doble gilte withe the Bushopp of Norwiche Armes and the Hoptons armes graved in the cover, and I will that these ij parcells the chalice and the cuppe shall remayn to hym and to his heires for ever, and bonde to be taken of the same by myne executours, and the chalice to be used in the chappell at Armeley Hall. Item I do give to John Hopton, my servaunte, x li., and to John Walgrave my man x li., yf these sumes maye be convenyentlie levyed, yf no then I will that the sayed Joh. Hopton and John Walgrave* shall have v li. a pece. Item I do geve unto Mr Thomas Lewin xl s., wth my pontyficall wich was his. I did cause the stone to be new sett and put to it one olde ryall or golde ryalls I can not tell. V. THE WILL OF SIR JAMES FOLJAMBE,* OF WALTON. (Chaynay, 21.)

26 Aug., 1558. Sir James Foliambe of Walton in the countie of Darby, knyght. To be buryed in the paryshe church of All Sayntes in Chestefeld in the chappell of Saynt George, nere unto the place where Alice my first wif lyethe. Also I will that my sonne Godfrey Foliambe, whom I ordeyn my sole executor, shall cause that my body be brought home and buryed, and that my sworde, helmett wth the beaste uppon the hoill of yt and my coote armour be hanged on my tombe there to remayn for ever. Also I bequeth to the Cathedrall church of Saynt Chaadd of Lichfeld sixe shillinges eight pence, to the reparacons of the church of Shefefeld aforesaid twentie shillinges, and to the church of Penkerich in the countie of Stafford x s. Also I gyve unto Lady Constance my wif my right wch I have in the parsonage, glebe and tythes of Lowdham in the countie of Nothingham, paying yerely to my sonne Godffrey tenne pounde, also my two tythe barnes in Derby and all my tythes of corne and haye in Derby, paying yerely unto my sonne Godffrey xvij li. vj s. viij d. I gyve to my sonne George Foliambe my parsonage of Adenboroughe in the countie of Nothingham, paying yerely to my sonne Godffrey xviij li., and my will is that the said Lady Constance shall have all her apparrell and all suche cheynes, rynges, byllimentes and jewelles of gold and silver as she haith bene accustomed to ware wch nowe be in her custody or kepyng. Also I gyve to my cosen Godffrey Foliambe my trotting gelding, and to my cosen Willm. Bethyck, my servaunt one gelding or nagge. Also I bequeath to my sonne George Foliambe one gelding and a shorte gowne of blacke satten gerded with velvett, to my doughter Mary one amblyng gelding or nagge to ryde uppon, and foure hunderth markes in money, to be paid unto her within foure yeres after my deceasse and fyve poundes yerely during the foure yeres ; to Dorothye and Susanne doughters of Margerye Baumeford either of theym fortie fyve poundes; to Barbarye my doughter thre hundrethe markes within viij yeres; to my doughter Fraunces two hundreth markes, within ix yeres one hundreth markes and wythin vij yeres then next following one hundreth markes to; my doughter Grace thre hunderth markes wthin twelve yeres; to my doughter Anne thre hunderthe markes wthin xv yeres. Also I bequeath to Lucy Grenehall my doughter one hunderth markes. Also to Anne doughter of Muryell Bochen xiij li. vj s. viij d. The resydewe of all my goodes I gyve to my sonne Godffrey Foliambe, whom I make my executor. vijth Oct., 1558. Sr Rauf Bulmer of Wilton, knight. To be buried within the parishe churche of Sainte Botulphts without Bishoppegate of London. To Thomas Bulmer als Thomas Larke all my ferme called Nonnehouse in the parrishe of Nunthrop in the saide countie, and to theires males of his bodie, and for defaulte of such yssue then to remayne to Myluesyne and Fraunces my daughters, and to theires of their bodies. To Thomas Jackson of London, sadler, everye yere yerely during the lif naturall of the saide Thomas fyve markes out of all my landes. To John Bulmer, ats John Cheyney, xx li. To everye of my servauntes three yeres wages. To John Norton my brother in lawe and his wif and to all his children three hundred marces. To John Parker of London, grocer, my yong graye ambling gelding. To the poore people within the parishe of Saincte Botulphes tenne poundes. The rest of my messuages, landes, as well in the countie of Yorke as elswhere, I geve to my said twoo daughters Melusyne and ffraunces. I ordeyne my welbeloved frends Sir Robert Ugtrett, knight, Henry Darcie, esquier, and the said John Parker, myn executours. The Residewe of my goodes, cattalles, plate, jewelles, ready money and debtes, I geve to my saide executours for their paynes egally to be divided.
