This pedigree starts, like that in Tonge's Visitation, with Richard Fairfax of Walton, (41 Surtees Soc., p. 57), but it was built up in the main line from that in Dalton's Visitation of 1558 in vol. i of this work, p. 144. It contains the same error of "Gypping" for "Gilling," and the same note that Sir William Fairfax, son and heir of Sir Nicholas, was made knight in Scotland after the siege of Leith by the Duke of Norfolk, anno 2 Elizabeth. The pedigree in 16 Harl. adopts Dalton for the earlier generations left out here and has many minor differences. References to wills, inquisitions and other evidences illustrative of the above pedigree will of Walton. be found in Clay, Extinct and Dormant Peerages of the Northern Counties of England, p. 62, under the title Fairfax, Lords Fairfax

This pedigree is also from Tonge's Visitation of 1530, with a generation added. 41 Surtees Soc., p. 58. Glover repeats the pedigree in 1585 without further additions except in stating that Anne Clifford died without issue. Her brother-in-law, Henry, Earl of Cumberland, died in 1570, so that this pedigree was compiled before that date. Notices of the memorial inscriptions to the family existing in 1620 are in Dodsworth's Church Notes, p. 98. The will of Sir Bryan Rocliffe, baron of the Exchequer, is printed in 2 Test. Ebor, p. 102, and Canon Raine's note thereto gives much information about the family. See also Foss's Judges, iv, 408-9.

This pedigree is taken from Tonge's Visitation of 1530, 41 Surtees Soc., p. 61, with a generation added. The similar pedigree
in 16 Harl. Soc. goes back two generations earlier and contains other names of collaterals and is carried down to the same point.
That in Foster, Yorkshire Visitations, p. 5, is more extended and is carried down to 1612. The epitaph in Whenby Church to
Conan Barton who died 11th April, 1436, and to Johanna his wife is noted in Ashmole MS, 834, printed ante at p. 113, and in
Dugdale's Church Notes, p. 179. The wills of Conan Barton dated the 8th and proved the 24th April, 1436, of Richard Barton, dated
10th Aug. and proved 9th Sep., 1458, and of Christopher Barton (son of Richard) dated 29th Aug., 1479 and proved 17th April,
1480, are printed in Test. Ebor, ii, pp. 215-217, with notes by Canon Raine. Administration to the estate of John Barton of
Whenby (son of Christopher i) was granted 17th April, 1508. York. Wills, 1389-1514, p. 11. The will of John Barton of Whenby
(son of John) who died 15 Feb., 1552-3, was proved 23 April, 1554, York. Wills, 1554-1568, p. 11. The reference to the inq. p.m.
of Thomas Barton is 7 Elizabeth Chanc. Ser., ii, vol. 142, No. 119. A grant of a crest to Thomas Dalton was made by Dalton,
Norroy. Grantees of Arms, i, p. 17. Setton as the domicile of Robert Strangwayes is obviously a mispelling. The editor of
16 Harl. Soc. has "Settons," and Foster, Visitations of Yorkshire, p. 5, has "Sneton." Sneaton was a home of the Strangwayes
and is prima facie the correct rendering, but Longstaffe in Tonge's Visitation, ubi supra, has "Ketton, and Surtees in his Hist.
of Durham, ii, 117, cites a charter one of the grantees of which is "Thomas Strangwish of Ketton.'
