The pedigrees of Hopton in 16 Harl. Soc. p. 154, and Foster, Yorkshire Visitations, p. 42, begin with Robert Hopton of Armley Hall, who married Janet, daughter of Sir John Langton, and had two sons, John and William. They give the descendants of John the first son only, and not those of William Hopton the second son.

There is a life of John Hopton (son of William) who was chaplain to Princess Mary, and afterwards Bishop of Norwich (1554-8), one of the severest persecutors of the Protestants, in the Dict. Nat. Biog. xxvii. p. 346. His will (dated 24th August, 1558, and proved 1st May, 1559) is printed in North Country Wills, vol. ii. p. 3.

SKELTON.

WILLIAM SKELTON, a yonger brother oute of the house of Armethawait in the shire of Comberland, maryed Jane, doughter and sole heire of Thomas Osmonde of Osmonthorp beside Ledes in the countie Ebor, and by her had yssu JOHN sonne and heire, Peter second sonne.

JOHN SKELTON of Osmonthorpe, sonne and heire of William, maryed one of the doughters of William Dynley

of Newton, and by her had yssu HENRY sonne and heire, Cleme[n]t seconde sonne, Richard thirde sonne, Julian, maryed to Lawrence Bayne of Colcotes.

HENRY, Sonne and heire of John, maryed Elizabeth, doughter and sole heire of Thomas, Lord of Poumfrete, and by her had yssu ROBERT sonne and heire, William seconde sonne, Nicholas thirde sonne, Elizabeth, maryed to Peter Nyrsell, sonne and heire to Nyrsell [this should read Peter Myrfeld, son and heir of Myrfeld] of Howley, Sibbell, maryed to Richarde Walke of Ledes, yeoman.

PETER, sonne and heire of Robert, maryed Margaret, doughter of William Rammsden of Langley, yeoman, which Margaret was one of the co-heirs by her mother to John Woode of Langley, and by her [the] sayde Peter Skilton had yssu Grace and Jane; and to his second wyfe he maryed Mary, doughter of Gilbert Leight of Mydelton and had yssu THOMAS.

The pedigree of Skelton from Anstis C. 9, is printed in the latter part of this volume. It does not nor does the similar pedigree printed in 16 Harl. Soc. p. 287, give Peter, son of Robert, and his family. St. George's pedigree of Skelton of Flamborough, however, begins with Peter Skelton; it gives him a second son, John, by Mary Leigh, and a third wife Anne Holgate, with three more children by her. Foster, Yorkshire Visitations, p. 169. The pedigree is carried a generation further by Dugdale in 1665. Surtees Soc. vol. 36, p. 21. The will of Henry Skelton of Osmondthorpe, dated 31st March, 1544, and proved 19th June, 1544, is printed in Test. Ebor. part vi. p. 182. By inq. p.m. taken 22nd November, 1544, it was found that he died 18th April, 1544, and that Robert, aged 35, was his son and heir. The reference to the ing. p.m. of Robert Skelton is 3 Elizabeth, Chancery Series II. vol. 129, no. 78, and to that of his brother Nicholas 21 Elizabeth, Chancery Series II. vol. 185.

The Skelton family, including Clement Skelton, Elizabeth widow of Henry Skelton, Nicholas and Elizabeth his wife, William and Joanna his wife, Peter Skelton and Margaret his wife, and Thomas, son of Peter, were parties to various fines concerning lands in Pomfret, Osmondthorpe and elsewhere, between the years, 1533 and 1594. MICHEL WENTFOURTH of Mendham in Southfolke, who was cofferer to queene Marie and second sonne to Thomas Wentfourth of Wentfourth Woodhouse, which Michell maryed Isabell, doughter and sole heire of Percevall Whitley of Whetley in Yorkshire, and by her had yssu THOMAS Sonne and heire, Michell seconde sonne, Henry third sonne, Margaret, Mabell, Alice, Helene* and Katherine.

THOMAS, Sonne and heire of Michel, maiyed Susan, doughter to Christofer Hopton of Armeley Hall, and by her had yssu MICHELL first sonne, Beatrice.

St. George's pedigree of 1612 gives further particulars. Foster, Yorkshire Visitations, p. 375. Dugdale's pedigree of Wentworth of Wolley recorded in 1665 is a continuation of that of St. George. Surtees Soc. vol. 36, p. 10.

The will of Thomas Wentworth of Wentworth was dated 21st August, 1546, and proved 8th March, 1548. Wills in the York Registry, 1514 to 1553, p. 194. The will of Michael Wentworth (the elder), dated 12th October, 1558, and proved 30th November, 1558, is printed in North Country Wills, vol. ii. p. 245. The wife therein mentioned, Agnes Curson, must have been a second wife. His first wife, Isabel, died some time before him; the reference to her inq. p.m. is 33 Hen. VIII. Chancery Series II. vol. 52. The reference to the inq. p.m. of Michael Wentworth is 1 Elizabeth, Chancery Series II.

Thomas Wentworth (the elder) was plaintiff in several fines concerning property in Wath, Wentworth and other places, between 1527 and 1537. Yorkshire Fines, vol. i. pp. 49, 51, 60, 61, 70, 78.

In a dispute concerning the use of a pasture called the Strennes, in Shitlington, it is stated that Thomas Wentworth is the lord thereof and one of the freeholders (1542). Yorkshire Star Chamber Proceedings, p. 79.

In 1560, the manor of Hopton was granted to Richard Thorpe by Thomas Wentworth of Goxhill-possibly the younger Thomas of the pedigree. Yorkshire Deeds, vol. i. p. 90.

Michael Wentworth and Frances his wife were parties to numerous fines concerning property in Altofts, Wath, Whitley, Woolley and elsewhere, between 1591 and 1600. WOMBWELL.

Be it noted that William Wombewell who cauleth him self of Wombewell, but it is to be shewed in auncient Recordes that the auncestors of the same William was named and called by the name of Lawvell, who came oute of Lankeshire, the which Recorde is to be shewed by Gilbert Leigh of Mydleton.

Gilbert Leigh of Middleton was married to Dorothy Woodrove, of Woolley, whose sister, Elizabeth Woodrove, married William Wombwell. St. George's pedigree of Wombwell of Wombwell does not record this marriage, but (as the fines cited below show) this William Wombwell is the William who was the father of Thomas Wombwell who married Frances Wentworth. Dugdale's pedigree of Wombwell is a continuation of St. George's. The connection of Wombwell's ancestors with the Lovell family is not mentioned by them. Foster, Yorkshire Visitations, pp. 365, 381. Surtees Soc. vol. 36, p. 180. In the Heralds' College MS. H. 19, there is a copy of a letter sent in 1565 by Flower, Norroy, to William Lawell, alias Wombwell, as to confirming to him the arms of Wombwell and a note at the foot as to a grant by Flower of a crest to the arms of Wombwell.

The reference to the ing. p.m. of William Wombwell is 20 Elizabeth, Chancery Series II. vol. 181, p. 64.

William Wombwell of Wombwell was party to two fines in 1547, and William and Elizabeth his wife, Thomas his son and Frances, wife of the latter, were parties to fines in 1570 and 1571; in a fine of 1578 appear the names of Thomas Wombwell and Frances his wife, and Elizabeth Wombwell, widow. Yorkshire Fines, vol. i. pp. 130, 133, 382; vol. ii. pp. 3, 130.

GASCOIGNE.

JOHN GASCONGE of the Thorpe on the Hill, a third brother desended oute of the house of Gawthorpe, and had yssu WILLIAM sonne and heire, Henry seconde sonne, clarke, and Elizabeth, maryed to one Verdayne.

WILLIAM, Sonne and heire to John, maryed Elizabeth, doughter and one of the co-hires of Swillington, and by her had yssu WILLIAM Sonne and heire.

WILLIAM, Sonne and heire of William, maryed to his first wyfe Dorothe, doughter of Thomas Stylington of Ackester, and by her had yssu WILLIAM, sonne and heire, Raffe seconde sonne, John thirde sonne, Margaret, maryed to Richard Leigh of Rothwell, a second sonne to William Leigh of Mydleton; and to his second wyfe he maryed Anne, doughter of Roger Leigh of Mydelton, who was widow to John Shillit of Medley, and by her had no yssu.

WILLIAM, sonne and heire of William, maryed Jane, doughter of Thomas Gryce of Wakefeld, and by her had yssu JOHN first sonne, William second sonne, Arthur thirde sonne, Robert fourth sonne, Anne, Margerey and Susanne.

The similar pedigree in 16 Harl. Soc. omits the name of the second William's second wife Anne. John Gascoigne was the third son of Sir William Gascoigne of Gawthorpe. In St. George's pedigree Elizabeth Swillington is given as the wife of John Gascoigne, and his son William's wife is given as Joan, daughter of Thomas Thwaites of Marston. The reference to the inq. p.m. of William Gascoigne (first of that name in the pedigree) is 30 Hen. VIII. Chancery Series II vol. 60, no. 125; and to that of John Gascoigne, 44 Elizabeth, Chancery Series 11. vol. 643, no. 17.

In 1534 John Gascoigne was deforciant to a fine concerning property in Cokewald and elsewhere; and in 1536, at Manston, seisin was delivered before John Gascoigne and others. Yorkshire Fines, vol. i. p. 69; Yorkshire Deeds, vol. ii. p. 111.

William Gascoigne (the second William in the above pedigree) of Thorpe-on-the-Hill, the younger, witnessed a sale of property in Ardsley, in 1552. Yorkshire Deeds, vol. i. p. 9.

William Gascoigne (the third William in the above pedigree) and Jane his wife, were deforciants to a fine concerning property in Driffield in 1577, and in the same year, with John their son, were parties to another similar fine. John Gascoigne was also party to fines in 1588 and 1593. Yorkshire Fines, vol. ii. pp. 100, 108; vol. ii. pp. 105, 202. Thorpe-on the-Hill is in the parish of Rothwell, near Leeds.

For Ackester read Acaster Malbis, in the West Riding of Yorkshire; and for " Medley' " read Methley, a parish town in the liberty of Pontefract.
