William Constable of Sherburne, the son and heir of the above-named Francis Constable, entered his pedigree at Glover's visitation in 1584. Foster, Visitations of Yorkshire, p. 177. That pedigree contains much additional information but it does not give, as does the above pedigree, the name of Agnes Harwood the wife of the first above-named William Constable, and the names of the daughters of that marriage and of their husbands. The will of William Constable, husband of Agnes Harwood, was dated 20th Jan., 1555, and proved 18th Feb., 1556. Wills in the York Registry, 1554-1558, p. 38. By inq. taken at York, 2nd Aug., 1557, it was found that he died 29th Dec., 1556, and that Francis his son and heir was aged 32.

That pedigree is much more extended but it omits the domicile of Charles Knevett and the name of Sir Henry Gates's daughter, Elizabeth, who died without issue. The Knevetts acquired Buckenham castle in Norfolk by marriage with an heiress of the house of Clifton. Sir Henry Gates is called Sir Henry Gate, not only in the above pedigree, but also in many deeds and in his inq. p.m. It was held at York on the 17th July, 1589, and it was there found that he died on the 7th April, 1589, and that Edward was his son and heir, and was then aged 40.

The family entered their pedigree again at Dugdale's visitation in 1666, and references to wills, inquisitions and other evidences relating to the entries in the text will be found in Clay, Dugdale's Visitations of Yorkshire with Additions, vol. iii. p. 310.

That pedigree omits the Christian name of John Hatfield and the name of Margery Constable, wife of Ollerye or Hilary Constable. The reference to the ing. p.m. of Maud Constable is 3 Elizabeth, Chancery Ser. II. vol. 129, no. 70, and to that of Hilary Constable is 14 Elizabeth, Chancery Ser. II. vol. 160, no. 43.

There is a pedigree, recorded by Lawrence Dalton, Norroy, in 1558, of Dalton of Kirkby Misperton in vol. i. of this work, p. 147, and the crest of the family, as tricked by Lawrence Dalton, is reproduced on p. 146 thereof. See also the notes to p. 147 thereof. The two pedigrees are in the main similar in form and contents, but the many small variations between them are evidence that the pedigree was furnished for registration by Roger Dalton, the head of the family, both to Lawrence Dalton in 1558 and to William Flower in 1563. For "Rookesby read Roxby. The site of the castle is about a mile west of Thornton Dale; for 66 Sprokeston" read Sproxton, near Helmsley; and for "Castle Eyton "read Capheaton.
