Dictionary of Polite Literature, 1804

This volume contains the famous history of the heathen gods and illustrious heroes. An attempt has been made to avoid the inconvenience of too many objects, or a too confined plan. It reconciles elegance with economy, and copiousness of information with convenience of size and form. The common mode of ornamenting mythological works, has in the present volumes been deviated from. Figures of the gods and goddesses had so often been given, that it was thought advisable to resort to something of more interest.
