Grant by John Helmeslay, son and heir of William Helmeslay, late citizen and merchant of York, by licence of the King,1 for the souls of the said William and of Alice, his father and mother, to Sir George Helmeslay and his successors, chaplains at the altar of the Holy Trinity in the church of S. Sampson, York, of four messuages in the city and suburbs, viz.: a messuage in Patrikpole now in the tenure of John Brome, extending in width between land of William Horneby of York and land of William Alne, and in length from the high street of Patrikpole before to land of Robert de Middelton of York, mercer, behind; a messuage in Patrikpole now in the tenure of William Haryngton, between a tenement of the prior and convent of Newburgh and land of Robert del Gare; a messuage in Gotherumgate between land of the prior and convent of Malton and the King's gutter or ditch; and a messuage without le Mikellyth in the suburb of York between land of the grantor and land of . 2 Askham;

also a yearly rent of 14 s. from a tenement in Girdelergate, now

inhabited by John Byrdesall, patoner. The grantor and his heirs shall present to the said chantry within a month of vacancy, and in their default, presentation shall remain successively to twelve parishioners, and to the mayor and commonalty. The chaplain shall celebrate and say Placebo and Dirige daily for the souls of William and Alice, except on the feasts of Christmas and Easter, and shall receive 8 s. by the year. The obits of William and Alice shall be celebrated by eight chaplains, each receiving 2 d. If there be not this number of chaplains celebrating constantly in the church, the chaplain shall procure others for the obits, and he shall pay to the clerk for ringing the bells 4 d., to the under clerk 2 d., and 4 d. to the town-crier (campanario civitatis Ebor') for ringing a bell through the city, as the manner is, to excite people to pray for the souls of William and Alice; and shall provide two wax candles, which shall burn on their tomb during mass of the dead.1 Witnesses, Henry Wyman, mayor, Robert de Kirkeby, John Usburn, sheriffs, Nicholas Blakburn, John de Bolton, mercer, Robert de Louth, Robert Ledes, John Hewyk, Thomas Doncastre, William Wynkburn, Thomas Esyngwald, William Wortelay, William del Both, clerk, citizens of York. (fo. 169). 12 February, 12 Henry iv. (1410-11). Writ of supersedeas to the sheriffs of the city of York upon a writ from the exchequer dated 3 June, 7 Henry iv. (1406), ordering them to levy 20 li. from the goods and chattels of the citizens and commonalty of that city within their bailiwick, which were due to Joan, queen of England, the King's consort, being part of a fine of 200 li. which she had made with him for all the liberties, franchises, etc., surrendered into his hand.
