At a Council Meeting of the Surtees Society, held in Durham Castle, on Tuesday, March 1st, 1910, the Dean of Durham in the Chair,

IT WAS RESOLVED,

That the volume to be issued for the year 1914 be MS. belonging to the Corporation of York, under the editorship of Miss Maud Sellers, Litt. D.

DEC 9 129 ALLEN

PREFACE.

My thanks are again due to Miss M. T. Martin, who undertook the task of transcribing the MS.

Mr. William Brown has given me invaluable help especially in seeing the book through the press. If, however, any mistakes still remain undetected, they are entirely due to me.

In a MS. where especially in the Anglo-French documents textual corruptions and scribal errors frequently occur, it seems preferable to leave them as they stand rather than correct silently, or burden the text with innumerable footnotes.

It is difficult for me to express adequately my gratitude to Miss Elinor Lucas and the Rev. W. Hudson, F.S.A. Their criticisms and suggestions have enabled me to correct, modify or re-state several points in the introduction.

37, ST. MARY'S, York, August 27th, 1915.
