Mr. William Brown has given me invaluable help especially in seeing the book through the press. If, however, any mistakes still remain undetected, they are entirely due to me. In a MS. where especially in the Anglo-French documents textual corruptions and scribal errors frequently occur, it seems preferable to leave them as they stand rather than correct silently, or burden the text with innumerable footnotes.
