Thy prefence yields a kind relief,
Thy word directs my doubtful way.

5 Tho' I walk thro' the gloomy vale
Where death and all its terrors are,
My heart and hope shall never fail,
For God my fhepherd's with me there.

6 Surely the mercies of the Lord

Attend his houshold all their days;
With them I'll dwell to hear his word,
To feek his face and fing his praise.

PSALM XXXV.

Perfections, providence, and grace of God.

1 HIGH in the heavens, eternal God,
Thy goodness in full glory fhines;
Thy truth fhall break thro' every cloud
That veils and darkens thy designs.

2 For ever firm thy juftice ftands,
As mountains their foundations keep;
Wife are the wonders of thy hands;
Thy judgments are a mighty deep.

3 Thy providence is kind and large,
Both man and beaft thy bounty fhare;

W.

The

The whole creation is thy charge,
Thy faints are thy peculiar care.

4 O God, how excellent thy grace!
Thence all our hope and comfort springs;
In fear, in trouble, and distress,

We'll seek the fhadow of thy wings. W.

PSALM XXXVI.

Penitence.

I SHEW pity, Lord, O Lord, forgive,
Let a repenting finner live;

Are not thy mercies large and free?
May not the contrite hope in thee?

2 A broken heart, my God, my King,
Is all the facrifice I bring;

The God of grace will ne'er despise
A broken heart for facrifice.

3 Oh cleanse this guilty foul of mine,
And free me from the bonds of fin;
Thy holy joys, my God, restore,
And guard me that I fall no more.

4 Then fhall thy love inspire my tongue, Salvation shall exalt my fong,

And

And all my powers fhall join to bless

The Lord, my ftrength and righteousness. W.

PSALM XXXVII.

Penitence.

1 O THOU that hear'ft when finners cry,
Tho' all my crimes before thee lie,
Behold them not with angry look,
But blot their memory from thy book.

2 Tho' I have oft forgot thee, Lord,
Thy help and comfort ftill afford;
And hear while, at thine awful throne
I plead thy promise by thy fon.

within;

3 Make me and keep me pure
Form my whole foul averfe to fin;
May thy good spirit ne'er depart;
Still let thy prefence cheer my heart.

4 I cannot live without thy light,
Caft out and banish'd from thy fight:
Thine holy joys, my God, restore,
And guard me that I fall no more.

PSALM XXXVIII,

PSALM XXXVIII.

Mercy and truth of God.

1 BE thou exalted, O my God,
Above the heavens where angels dwell;
Thy power on earth be known abroad,
And land to land thy wonders tell.

2 My heart is fix'd; my fong fhall raise
Unceafing honours to thy name;
Awake, my tongue, to found his praise,
My tongue, the glory of my frame.

3 High o'er the earth his mercy reigns,
And reaches to the utmost sky;
His truth to endless years remains,
Tho' lower worlds diffolve and die.

4 Be thou exalted, O my God,

Above the heavens where angels dwell;
Thy power on earth be known abroad,
And land to land thy wonders tell.

PSALM XXXIX.

Trust in God alone.

W.

I MY fpirit looks to God alone;

My rock and refuge is his throne;

โค

In all my fears, in all my ftraits,
My foul for his falvation waits.

2 Truft him, ye faints, in all your ways,
Pour out your hearts before his face :
Tho' friends forfake and foes invade,.
God is our all-fufficient aid:

3 Make not increasing gold your trust,
Nor fet your hearts on glittering duft;
Why will you grasp the fleeting smoke,
And not believe what God hath spoke?

4 Once hath his awful voice declar'd, Once and again our ears have heard, All praise is his eternal due;

He must be fear'd and trusted too.

5 For 'tis not power that reigns alone,
Grace guides the counfels of his throne:
And grace and juftice fhall difpenfe
To all a righteous recompenfe.

PSALM XL.

Goodness, patience, and justice of God.

1 WE bless the Lord, the juft, the good, Who fills our hearts with joy and food;
