Here we must bring to a close these scattered pages, in which an attempt has been made to convey to the reader, by the combination of travelling sketches and historical notices, some idea of the present condition of spots which must remain hallowed as long as the world endures, in many of which the last monumental vestiges of apostolic times are fast mouldering away, so that the pilgrim of the next century will vainly seek to trace their form or to fix their site.
