SCOTLAND..

CIRCUIT INTELLIGENCE.

Inverness, Sept. 24, 1799.

The Circuit Court of Justiciary was opened here on Saturday laft by the Right Hon. Lord Methven.William Munro, poft-runner from Dumbeath to Thurfo, accufed of abftracting letters from the mail bag, was found guilty of abstracting, at the time libelled, the four letters mentioned in the indictment from the Tail bag made up at the General Poft Office in Edinburgh for the Poft Office at Thurfo." Mr Grant of Rothiemurchus, Counfel for Munro, who had made a very able defence for him during the trial, ftated feveral objections to the verdict, which being anfwered by the Advocate-Depute, Lord Methven remitted the cafe to the High Court of Jufticiary at Edinburgh.

William Ballantyne and John Cleghorn were brought to the bar, charged with celebrating irregular and clandeftine marriages, they being members or miffionaries of an affociation, not known or recognised by law, and ftyling itself, "A

Society for propagating the Gospel at

The Advocate D pute ftated at fome length the ground upon which the profecution was brought. He ftated, that these Miffionaries belonged to an Aff ciation, which, if not

at leaft, in its fyftem, trictly illegal, was principles and formation, novel and unprecedented in this country, and in its tendency dangerous, not only to the effablished religion, but to the fablished government of the country. Their chi f object then was, as apprars from Mr. Haldane's & Tour in 17972 to alienate the minds of people from their Legal Pastors, and in the most arrogant manner to reprefent their Doctrines, as not only derogotary from the Golpel. but as fubverfive of the fift principles of Christianity.

That from these confiderations, the Public Profecutor would be fully warranted to infift against the pannels on the indictment which he had preferred: at the fame time, being aware, that of late years no profecution of this kind had been brought, while the law with regard to the celebration of marriages had by no means been strictly obferved;' and aware alfo, that it might be thought a mode of perfecuting this new establishment (which, whatever its real object might be, profeffed at leaft to be inftituted for the purpofe of Religious Inftruction,) to fix upon any of its members as the firi objects against whom the law relative to fuch clandeftine marriages was at this time to be inforced; knowing alfo, that nothing tended more to promote the views and to gratify the wifhes of any body of Sectaries, than the leaft appear ance of perfecution; he thought it would anfwer fully the end he had at present in view, by ferving this indictment, to let thefe men and the public know, that their conduct had not escaped attention, and would, if perfifted in, in the manner hitherto followed, become still the fubjet of profecution. After this notice, they would have no ground to pretend, if it afterwards became neceflary to inflitute this profecution anew, that they were rigorously dealt with, or feverely treated. On thefe confiderations, he moved the Court to defert the diet pro loco tempore, which was done accord. This ends the Northern Circuit.
