unto thee; if we would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.

'God hath done great things, and unsearchable; marvellous things, past finding out. Great things doth he, which we cannot comprehend.

2

No man can find out the work that God maketh, from the beginning to the end: though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea, though a wise man think to know it, yet he shall not be able to find it.

3 Stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God? Dost thou know when God disposed them? Dost thou know the wondrous works of him which is perfect in knowledge?

4 Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with a span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?

5 The host of heaven cannot be numbered, neither the sand of the sea measured.

6

Lo! these are parts of his ways; but how little a portion is there of him?

'As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with child; even so thou knowest not the works of God, who maketh all.

CHAPTER III.

Concerning the Nature and Condition of Man.

THE ORIGINAL FORMATION AND STATE OF MAN.

1 GOD created man in his own image, after his likeness in the likeness of God made he him.

2

* He made him a little lower than the angels; and crowned him glory and honour.

3 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. He was fearfully and wonderfully made; and his substance curiously wrought in secret.

4

And because it was not good that the man should be alone, the Lord made a woman to be an help meet for him; and she was taken out of man.

5

The man is not of the woman, but the woman of the man; neither was the man created for the woman, but the woman for the man. For the man is the image and glory of God, but the woman is the glory of the man.

6

4

There is a spirit in man, and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.

7 God our Maker teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth; and maketh us wiser than the fowls of heaven.

The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord. 'God made man upright.

1

1 The Lord made him to have dominion over the works of his hands; he put all things under his feet. All sheep, and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field; the fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the

seas.

2

And the Lord planted a garden in Eden; and out of the ground he made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden: and the tree of knowledge of good and evil: and he put the man whom he had formed into the garden, to dress it ́and to keep it.

3 And the Lord commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof, thou shalt surely die.

4

And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowls of the air, and to every beast of the field.

5

And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

6

THE FALL OF MAN.

Now the Serpent having beguiled Eve through his subtilty, she took of the fruit of the tree, of which God had said unto the man and the woman, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die; and she did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her, and he did eat.

'And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and therefore they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

[blocks in formation]

'And when they heard the voice of the Lord calling unto them, they were afraid, and hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God. And when the Lord asked them whether they had eaten of the tree whereof he commanded them that they should not eat; the man, to excuse himself, said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat; and the woman, to cover her guilt, said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

2

Then the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field: upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life. And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

3 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children, and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

* And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it; cursed is the ground for thy sake : in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and in the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground.

5 Unto Adam also, and unto his wife, did the Lord God make coats of skin, and clothed them.

5 Gen. iii. 21.

1 And the Lord God said, Behold the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: And therefore lest he should put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever, the Lord drove him out from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.

2

After this Adam knew his wife; and he begat a son, in his own likeness, after his image. And after he had lived nine hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters, he died.

And it came to pass when men began to multiply upon the face of the earth, that the earth was corrupt before God, and filled with violence; and the wickedness of man was great, and every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And thus it continued till the flood came and destroyed them all; Noah only remaining alive, and they that were with him in the ark, which God had commanded him to make; wherein few, that is, eight souls, were saved by water.

After the flood, when the generations of the sons of Noah were multiplied, the whole earth was of one language and of one speech, till they attempted to build them a city and a tower, whose top might reach unto heaven; and then the Lord confounded their language, that they might not understand one another's speech; and from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

5 Since which time the Lord weakened the strength of man, and shortened his days.
