During that period the Spaniards had made great progrefs in exploring its various regions. They had vifited all the islands scattered in different clusters through that part of the ocean which flows in between North and South America. They had failed along the eaftern coaft of the continent from the river De la Plata to the bottom of the Mexican gulf, and had found that it ftretched without interruption through this vaft portion of the globe.
