A Bible Tour in the Abruzzi and the Marches.

BY REV. N. H. SHAW.

AT half-past five o'clock on the morning of the 16th of October, I left home for a tour of nearly a week, among the Apennines and on the Adriatic coast. The object was twofold, viz., to do some missionary work, and carry the New Testament where it had probably never been seen; and at the same time to study the ground in the hope of one day planting a new station or stations. I was joined by Mr. Wall, and we made first for Tivoli. Thence we took the diligence to Avanzano. A ride in a diligence of eleven-and-a-half hours is not exactly desirable generally, but in this case we passed through such magnificent scenery as to render it thoroughly enjoyable. The road winds through most striking gorges; rising to the height of 3400 feet, it has sublime heights above it and deep gloomy ravines beneath, reminding one of some of the best parts of Wales and Scotland. Olive groves and vineyards have taken possession of the hillsides, and almost everywhere there is a careful cultivation which contrasts strangely with the neglected malariabreeding Roman Campagna. The white limestone rocks gleaming in the sunshine, relieved here and there by tracts of ochreous and bright red earth, and clothed, but not hidden, by foliage presenting every variety of autumn tints-flaming red, which suggested "the burning bush," and gold and purple of many shades; the strange but lovely effects of light and shade on the hill tops, especially at sunset--effects witnessed nowhere save among the mountains in southern lands, and occasionally making earth look so ethereal as to help the mind to realize what Spirit may be; the white road winding round and up the hills like a strong cable binding together earth's beauties in one mass, with cities set on hills, at every turn coming into view, and
