Daniel to Babylon-who was a man greatly beloveduntil the appearance of the man of sin, was 1212 years. From 606, when the son of perdition was manifested, until the year 1818, in which the man-child, the second Daniel, was born, is also 1212 years. Of this man it is also said, "All ye, assemble yourselves, and hear; which among them hath declared these things? The Lord hath loved him he will do his pleasure on Babylon, and his arm shall be on the Chaldeans. I, even I, have spoken; yea, I have called him: I have brought him, and he shall make his way prosperous." (Isa. xlviii. 14, 15.) Thus "then a prince, for his own behalf, shall cause the reproach offered by him to cease; without his own reproach he shall cause it to turn upon him." The pope has now enough to do in his own land; he has stumbled and fallen, and soon shall his antichristian power be destroyed, and not be found. So then also is partly fulfilled, and soon to be fully accomplished, what is written, "Then he shall turn his face toward the fort of his own land: but he shall stumble, and fall, and shall not be found."

Rev. xii. 10-12. "And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night." This is the cry which shall now be uttered; all men shall see the glory of the Lord; Christ's kingdom is come; God's will shall be done on earth as in heaven; Satan's power, as the adversary of God and man, accusing the one to the other, shall be utterly overthrown, for I saw Satan as lightning fall from heaven; his actual spiritual dominion is ended; but in destroying those who are led captive

by him at his will, and in destroying himself, he shall cause such a time of trouble as never was, since there was a nation, even to this same time; no, nor ever shall be again. Therefore it is written: "And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death." The war was to be a spiritual warfare between the powers of light and darkness. Satan's accusations, by which he strove to draw down the vengeance of God against penitent sinners, and struggled to destroy their hope of mercy, by presenting Jehovah to their minds as One who would not forgive, were overthrown by the blood of the Lamb which taketh away the sin of the world, and through whom God sees no iniquity in Jacob, neither perverseness in Israel. Satan's wiles and seductions to sin, they met by the word of God, the two-edged sword of the Spirit; and even as Christ triumphed in the wilderness, so did they, by constantly appealing to the word of God, which they made the word of their testimony. "They loved not their lives unto the death." Let all men be warned, except a man be willing to forsake all and follow Christ, if he loves even life itself more than he loves his Lord, he is not fit for the kingdom of God. These words are intended to convey a needful admonition to all christian professors-he that hath an ear, let him hear. "Therefore, rejoice ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them." To every section of the true church of Christ, and to all believers, although this be a time of great trouble, the fiery trial which is to try them, it will also be a time of unspeakable joy. Their eyes shall see, and their ears shall hear, those things which prophets and righteous men desired to see, but saw not, and to hear, but heard not. The very greatness of your

cause of joy, renders essential to your true happiness, a corresponding cause of godly sorrow, lest ye should be exalted above measure, by the abundance of the revelations made known unto you. Ye shall have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. "Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time." By the time this is fulfilling, Great Britain shall have become a perfect man in Christ, according to the number six hundred threescore and six; and the earth will be those other nations who are then in process of training, and near the kingdom of God; while the sea will still represent all the European nations, among whose people, the inhabiters of the earth and the sea, Satan shall be let loose with great fury, to destroy and make away with many. But his time shall be very short, for the Lord shall make a quick work in righteousness.

Rev. xii. 13-17. "And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man-child." Although the great conflict has now reached its last stage, and is chiefly referred to in the preceding verse as at its close, still it began in the time of Luther; and in 1518, when Luther came into collision with the pope, and appealed from him to a general council of the church, knowing in his heart the truth as it is in Jesus; Satan then began to see that he was cast unto the earth, and he persecuted the church so long as it remained within his power. "And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent." The time,

[blocks in formation]

and times, and a half, are used in this verse to denote three centuries and a half, and is the number of years which would elapse from 1518 until the church would appear in its glory. The woman is represented as flying, which signifies, that the truth being revived in one country was carried to another, and that the church was there nourished during the troublous times upon the continent. Before the pope's rise the woman, as she then was, fled in 563 to Scotland, and in 596 to England; in the year 1534 she fled again, in her revived state, to England, where she has since been nourished. Therefore it is added, "And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood. And the earth helped the woman; and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth." The water as a flood, are the waters of affliction or persecution—a flood of ungodliness-by which Satan attempted to destroy the church of the reformation. The earth-Great Britain-helped the woman; and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth. It is therefore written by the prophet Isaiah, "So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west, (where Great Britain is,) and his glory from the rising of the sun: (the east, where also she has extensive possessions, to whose inhabitants she must now make known the glory of her God:) when the enemy (the dragon,) shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him." (Isa. lix. 19.) In this manner, by the outpouring of God's Spirit, has Great Britain been enabled to lift and to hold up the standard both of political and religious truth; and has been honoured by

God to maintain a testimony for Him, and become a bulwark against Satan. The dragon made many unsuccessful attempts to bring Britain anew under his galling yoke; these having all failed, being overruled and made to further God's glorious purpose towards the nation, and through them towards the world at large; "the dragon was wroth with the woman," and when he could not longer molest her, "he went to make war with the remnant of her seed," among continental nations "which keep the commandments of God," (which are but two, faith in Christ and love to all men,) "and have the testimony of Jesus Christ;" that being what is written in the Scriptures of truth, the spirit of prophecy. Three centuries and a half of prophetic reckoning are 345 ordinary years; from 1518 to 1863, the year in which the number of Great Britain shall be 666, is 345 years. From 1534 to 1879, when Antichrist shall be overthrown and France converted, is also 345 years. The three hundred and ninety days of Ezekiel iv. 5, are 385 ordinary years; from 1518 to 1903, the year in which Judah, the natural seed of Abraham, shall be united with the other nations of christians in one glorious kingdom, is 385 years. Forty of these years were for the house of Judah, (Ezek. iv. 6,) so that deducting them from 1903 gives the year 1863, in which Great Britain shall be like unto a lamb having two horns, and speaking with the still small voice of God.

The manner in which Satan has conducted his warfare against the woman displays considerable wisdom and subtlety as well as system; but his was only the small wheel within God's large wheel, the rings of which were so high that they were dreadful. During the brief reign of Edward VI. the reformation made rapid progress; but
