prove as fair as her glossy curls; indeed it is difficult to reconcile with her earlier history the character which historians give of the accomplished and respected Duchess of Ferrara, whose beauty and talents were sung by all the poets of the age.

But to have done-In the beautiful old church called "Il Ganto," at Padua; beautiful from its antiquity, its gloom, its superstitious associations; and its variety of decoration rivalled only by that of San Francesco d'Assisi-amidst ex-votos innumerable and lamps which throw here and there a light on the distant objects almost forgotten in the shade:-in the middle of this beautiful old church, on the third column to the right, is a monument to the memory of Cardinal Bembo-his portrait is upon it, sculptured by Cataneo:-It is of this portrait on the monument that Göthe remarked when he saw it, that it had the air of a man, "fortement concentré en lui-même."

EVENING was closing in when we reached the superb mountain pass of Monte Forte, situated on the road from Naples to the southern provinces of that kingdom. The country still bears marks of fire and sword, and the ruin that war inevitably brings with it.

Here the Carbonari made a successful stand in 1820, and from hence the Calabrians, headed by the Priest Minichini, marched into Naples. Monte Forte is a straggling village or town, which lines both sides of the road for a considerable way, and half its houses are burnt down, or in ruins.
