ORDER OF THE VISITATION OF THE SICK ACCORDING TO THE RUBRIC OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND.

Here shall the sick person be moved to make a special Confession of his sins, if he feel his conscience troubled with any weighty matter. After which Confession, the Priest shall absolve him (if he humbly and heartily desire it) after this sort.

UR Lord Jesus Christ, who hath left power to his Church to absolve

O all sinners who truly repent and believe in him, of his great mercy forgive thee thine offences: And by his authority committed to me, I absolve thee from all thy sins, In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

THE ORDER FOR THE BURIAL OF THE DEAD.

Here is to be noted, that the office ensuing is not to be used for any that die unbaptized, or excommunicate, or have laid violent hands upon themselves. (Drunkards and others are not excluded.)

Then, while the earth shall be cast upon the Body by some standing by, the Priest shall say,

Fo

ORASMUCH as it hath pleased Almighty God of his great mercy to take unto himself the soul of our dear brother here departed, we therefore commit his body to the ground; earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust; IN SURE AND CERTAIN HOPE of the Resurrection to eternal life, through our Lord Jesus Christ; who shall change our vile body, that it may be like unto his glorious body, according to the mighty working, whereby he is able to subdue all things to bimself.

Almighty God, with whom do live the spirits of them that depart hence in the Lord, and with whom the souls of the faithful, after they are delivered from the burden of the flesh, are in joy and felicity; We give thee hearty thanks for that it hath pleased thee to deliver this our brother out of the miseries of this sinful world. We meekly beseech thee, O Father, to raise us from the death of sin unto the life of righteousness; that, when we shall depart this life, we may rest in him, AS OUR HOPE IS THIS OUR BROTHER DOTH.

FALSE POSITIONS.

The false position in which the published doctrines of the Liturgy, Articles, Creeds, and Canons of the Church of England places any of its Ministers who have been brought to see the work of the Holy Spirit is not to be performed by any church ordinances, is often strongly and glaringly manifested, both in their ministration and in their writings. The Rev. J. C. Ryle's tracts I have noticed at page 65; since the tract "All in All" was written, he has published another;-" Have you the Spirit? a question for 1854;" equally with "All in All," soundly scriptural, thoroughly spiritual, and full of the living waters of the Gospel, containing no limited salvation, no churchism. But when the reverend gentleman was writing this, he must have been struck with the fact that, he was strongly and emphatically condemning some of the doctrines of his own church, and what is more, his own practice. At page 11 of "Have you the Spirit," he

says

"All members of churches and baptized persons have not the Spirit. I see no ground in Scripture for saying that every man who receives baptism, receives the Holy Ghost, and that we ought to regard him as born of the Spirit. I dare not tell baptized people that they all have the Spirit, and that they only need stir up the gift of God within them in order to be saved. I see on the contrary that Jude speaks of members of the visible church in his day as "not having the Spirit." Some of them probably had been baptized by the hands of apostles, and admitted into full communion with the professing church. No matter! they "had not the Spirit."-Jude xix. Baptism and churchmanship are no proofs of His presence. How then shall I know whether a man has the Spirit?"

Now let the reader remark, the writer of this sound doctrine has himself submitted to the imposition of the Bishops' hands, under the pretence of imparting to him the Holy Ghost, and giving him the power to remit or retain all or any of his fellow sinner's sins; (see Ordination Service) powers he so strongly asserts in his tract, can only be exercised by the Holy Spirit itself; and moreover, in the exercise of his ministerial office, he has every week, and probably more than once or twice in the week, to declare in the presence of God and the church, that infants are regenerated by baptism, kneeling with the parents, godfathers, and godmothers, when baptizing a child, and saying, Seeing now, dearly beloved brethren, that this child is by baptism regenerate,' &c.; again; "We yield thee most hearty thanks most merciful Father, that it hath pleased thee to regenerate this infant with thy Holy Spirit,' &c. If words mean what they express, a more flat contradiction of what he has written in his tract could not be penned. Again, in the Catechism which he has solemnly bound himself to teach and believe with all the other Creeds, Articles, and Doctrines of his church, when the child is of sufficient age, he teaches it the same baptismal regeneration as follows:-" What is your name?" Answer:-"N. or M." "Who gave you this name?" Answer:-"My Godfathers and my Godmothers in my baptism, wherein I was made a member of Christ, the child of God, and an inheritor of the kingdom of heaven." It is marvellous to see a minister, after he has publicly taught this, write a book and say,

"All baptized persons have not the Spirit." His solemnly pronouncing in his public ministrations that children are regenerated by baptism, inculcates and perpetuates a doctrine which he holds up in his tract as a soul-destroying delusion. Any after efforts he may make to unsay what he is every week teaching will reach a very small number compared with those who do not see how he has to deny the doctrines he teaches in his ministerial capacity, and endeavour to undeceive the parents, godfathers, and godmothers, before and with whom he has declared this regeneration by baptism. From the ritual it is clear every Minister of the Church of England who does not believe in regeneration by baptism is placed in the same anomalous position, It will, however, be seen by the other quotations in this book, that although the Ministers of the Church of England have all solemnly pledged themselves, by the most solemn vows, oaths, and snbscriptions, to hold, believe, and practise the doctrines of the Church of England as they are plainly laid down in the Liturgy, Creeds, Articles, Canons, &c., yet they teach and practise doctrines as diametrically opposite as the poles are asunder. I leave the reader to make his own comment on the soundness of such a system. Studly to shew thyself approved unto God, a workınan that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."-II. Tim. ii. 15.

"In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, SINCERITY. Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you."-Titus ii. 7. 8.
