24 Oct., 1558. Percivall Creswell of Nunkelyng in Holdernes. To the poore of Nunkelinge x S. To Cassander, my welbeloved wif, to her owne use aswell all my lease and terme of yeres that I have in the house in Fletestrete, nere Fletebridge of London, as also all that my lease that I have in the houses in the newe or late parishe of Strande or Savye. To my cosynne John Creswell of London, bruer, xl s. To Richarde Rigges, my servaunt, fourtie shillinges. To George Creswell, my sonne, my signett with the castell that I use to were of my fouremost fynger. To William Rastell, sergeant at lawe, my loving Mr and frende, my ringe of golde withe the great rubie in ytt. To Mr Anthony Huse, my loving Mr and frende, my ringe of golde that I had of the gift of my late Mr, Sr Richarde Tressham, knyghte, deceased, that had his naume about ytt. To every of my godchildren tenne shillinges. I will that all the yerely rentes &c. in Nunkelinge in the countie of Yorke, and in the lease in the house in Fryday strete in the citie of London shall yerely and equally be devyded in thre partes, that is to saye my said welbeloved wif to have one of the thre partes to her awne use, and another of the saide iij partes to be bestowed on the fynding and brynging upp of my sixe children, George, Thomas, Richarde, Benjamyn, Arthure, and Elizabeth Creswell, and another of the saide thre partes to be equally devided betwene my said children by even portions. IX. THE WILL OF THOMAS BABINGTON,*OF DETHICK, CO. DERB., AND KINGSTON, CO. NOTTS. (Loftes, 14.)

10 Nov., 1558. Thomas Babington of Dethycke, esquire. I will that my poore beade folkes, beinge suche as have lately be used to have my weekly almes, shall have theire almes duringe theire lyves, and a blacke gowne and hoode at my decease, and that xxtie of the most poorest folkes of Asheover parishe have eache of them a blacke gowne, and every one to have every Sondaye in the yere one penny duringe a yere next after my decease. To Syr Frauncis Babington my sonne for terme of his lyef all my landes &c. in Wigwal and my tenemente in Cryche and another tenemente in Alderwasleigh, all whiche of the yerely value of xxtie markes. And I desire that my sonne Richarde Babington shall have the xxti markes yerelye rente accordinge to his pattente made or to be made by me at the hande of my sonne and heire. To my sonnes Edwarde Babington and Thomas Babington the personage of Mernham in the countie of Nott., and all my tenementes in Lutchwiche and the tythes of Whetcrofte and Tansely all whiche be of the value of fortie markes. To Marmaducke Babington my sonne for terme of his lyef all my landes in Wessington and Criche of the value of xv li. xj d. · I will that my executors shall paye six hundred markes to the marriage of Margaret Babington my doughter, and also paie to her every quarter of the yere after my decease v markes, and so every yere xxti markes to her till she be married, or be of the full age of xxjtie yere. I give to hym that is my heire and a man of xxti yeres olde, or at the tym he shalbe xxti yeres olde, x oxen, ten kyn, and a bull, one hundreth wether sheep, and one hundreth ew shepp, with all the waines, cartes, wheeles, plowes, yokes, temes of wood or iron, harrowes, tymber, and suche lyke wodd ware, and stuf of husbandrye of wood as shalbe at Dethicke. Also I give to hym ten beddes, as they shalbe at my decease, that is to saie fower fetherbeddes, with fower bolsters of tyke filled with downe or fethers, vj mattresses, and six bolsters of canvas for the mattresses, with xxtie coverlettes and viij blanketes and iiij paire of fyne flaxen shetes of my best sheetes and fower of my best coverlettes, and iiij pillowes of ffustian with downe or fethers, and iiij pillowbeeres, six paire midlenge sheetes, and to hym in the kitchen iiij pottes, iiij pannes of brasse mettell, iiij spittes, with one paire iron cobberdes, a mettall morter, and my best chafer and a chafing dishe with ij garnishe of vessell of pewter, and also the bruehouse there and the milke house as hit is there furnisshed. Also I give to my sonne Henry or to hym that I shall appointe to be my or his heire at the tyme he shalbe xxti yeres olde, my bason and ewer of silver and ewer of pewtor, and ij standinge silver cuppes gilte, and the cover and the best salte of silver doble gilte with the cover, with one dozen of silver spoones, ij diaper boardeclothes, ij diaper cupborde clothes, one dozen of diaper napkins, ij diaper towelles and ij flaxen towelles, ij flaxen boorde clothes, one dozen of flaxen napkins, iiij mydlinge boorde clothes, my best carpitt, with other ij the next best carpittes, a dozen cusshins and ij cupborde clothes, all the belles and the clarke bookes, vestmentes, challis of silver and the ornamentes and ymplementes of my chappell of Dethicke, and my sealinge ring of gold that was lefte to me by my grandfather Thomas Babington. And I devise that he that is my heire shall for xvj yeres at leaste yerely fynde at the chapell of Dethicke one honest prest or minister to sellebrate devine service daylye there, and that my heire shall give to the said minister compitente meate, drinke, lodginge, fier and fuell, and that Syr Miles Whiteworth shalbe the saide preest, and yf my saide heire doe not but refuse to finde the prest or to paye hym, then I will all suche tenementes in Alfreton late belonginge to the chauntrye at Alfreton, wherof one Syr Robarte White was chauntry preste, and also landes in

Somercotes, shalbe to my executors for xxti yeres to fynde the saide Syr Myles or other preste. I will that yf my sonne Henry or the issue male of his boddie decease withoute issue male that all my mannors, landes &c. shall not descende to the heires females of any of my sonnes, but shall come to my sonne Richard Babington for terme of his lyef, remainder to my sonne George Babington, remainder to every of my yonger sonnes and to the heires males of eche. Also I will and charge my heire to leave the chappell and the goodes devised or lyke value, as my grandfather Thomas Babington devised the same or suche like thinges to my father Sr Anthony Babington or to myself. To every of my yonger sonnes and to. my doughter Margaret a fetherbedd and a bolster, ij fustian pillowes, a mattres and a bolster, ij woollen blanketes, iiij coverletes, ij redd coveringes and the one of tapestry or imagery worke, and the other of woollen cloth and ij paire of conveniente sheetes to the saide beddinge. I make executors Sir Fraunces Babington, preste, Edwarde Babington, Marmaduke Babington and Thomas Babington my yonger sonnes, and my supervisors my derely belovide my honorable lorde and sonne in lawe, John Lord Darsy, Henry Babington my eldest sonne, George Babington my sonne, and my cosen Richarde Blackwall, esquires. 4 Dec., 1558. Edwarde Bussye, esquyer, of Haydor. To be buryed in the chappell of saynt Edward within the paryshe churche of Haydor. To the high alter vj s. viij d. To the churche twentye shillinges, and my whole sute of redd satton for prest, deacon and subdeacon, with a cope of the same. Unto Frauncis Bussye, George Bussye and Edward Bussye, my thre sonnes, all my landes in Muskaun, Bathlay, and Holme within the countye of Notingham, and Croston within the countye of Lyncoln, for terme of their lyves equally. I will that Katheryn Fairfax have markes which her father bequethed in his will. Also where as I was bound unto my wiffe freyndes to give unto Mawde Farefax fortye poundes I wil that yt be a hundreth markes. To my doughter Brigett Bussye an hundreth poundes. * There is a pedigree of Bussy in Lincolnshire Visitations (Harleian Soc.).

Unto every one of my thre sonnes Fraunces, George and Edward tenne poundes a peace to begyn their stockes. Unto my sonne Mr Charllys Bawdys and Katheryn his wife xxxiij li. vj s. viij d. To Edmonde Bussy my sonne a hunderth ewes, also I forgive hym vj li. which I paied unto Johan Marcalle. To my doughter Johan Bussy wif a crymsyn damaske kyrtill or the best damaske gowne whether she will, and that as she refusys my doughter Elizabeth Porter shalhave. Unto Katheryn Bawdes my dowghter the secunde damaske gown. To Brigett the whyte damaske kyrtill. To Katheryn Fayrefax the black chamblett gown. I will that Mawde have a gowne bought her of honest rattes coullor made redy for her. To my suster Mearys my hoppe ring of gold which was my mothers. To my cossyn Frauncis Molynex my ring of gold that haith a stone seale. To my cossyn Mary Molynex my silver grater that is gilted. To Syr John Daveson my wiffes hambling graye nagg. will that Syr John Daveson shall sing for my father Edmond Bussys soule, my mother Tomassyn Busy soule, my sone Edward Bussye, my wiff Jane Bussy soule, my wif Katheryn Bussy soule, my uncle Edward Bussy soule, Gye Fayreffax soule, and all my good fryndes and all xpen soules ix yeres.
