XXXIV. THE WILL OF HUMPHREY QUERNBY,† OF NOTTINGHAM. (Daper, 3.)

22 May, 1565. Humprye Quernebie, one of the Aldermen of the towne of Nottingham and of the parrishe of Seynt Maries there. I bequeathe my soule to Almightie God, to the blessed virgin marye, and all the celestiall companye of heaven, and my bodie to be buried within the churche of Seynt Maries next unto my father in lawe, Robert Mellors. I will that my goodes be devided in three partes, the firste to my wiffe, the second to my three children, Edward, Anne, and Marie, and the third to the performance of the legacies. To Elizabeth my wiffe all my plate and one golde ringe with a saphier, and my moytie of the tythe haye of Snaynton meadowe, in the countie of Nottingham, for her liffe, and after her decease to Robert my sone for ever. To Robert my sone my best gowne furred with foynes, and the best next that furred with conye, blacke conye, my best rydinge coate, my sleveles coate, my satten doublett, my furred cloke, and a golde ringe with a seale of a bell, one close or pasture next unto the Linges, in the Countie of Nottingham, nowe in the tenure of Reignolde Cartwrighte of the yerlie rent of xxxiij s. iiij d., and one howse in the towne of Baseforde of the yerlie rent of xiij s. iiij d., one little close belonginge and twoe peces of meadowe within the lordshipe of Lewton in the saied countie, of the yerlie rent of iij s., all which are in the occupacon of one William Dawson of Basford, and one other house in Basford, now in the tenure of William Tickhill, of the rent of xx s., and also twoe houses in Listergate within the towne of Nottingham, and one garden in the brode mershe of the saied towne, in the which John Elton nowe hathe a lease, of the rent of xx s., and fouer little cottages standinge in the lowe pavement in the saied towne

To Gamaliell Quernebie, one other of my sones, one house in the narrowe marshe within the towne of Nottingham, in the tenure of Denyse Cowper, of the yerlie rent of xxvj s. viij d., ymediatlie after the decease of Elizabeth my wiffe, also the some of tenne poundes. To my daughter Margerie Gregorie a brasse potte with longe feete. To Mr John Gregorie my son in lawe my shorte gowne faced with damaske. To everie of Mr Lanes children and Mr Gregories children iij s. iiij d. a pece, and to Gervice Lane and Edward Lane either of them an ewe and a lambe. To either of my twoe daughters Anne and Marye fourtie shillinges. I will that Humfrey Hunte my servaunte shall have one messuage in Bulwell, in the Countie of Nottingham, in the tenure of William Dawson, at suche tyme as he shall marrie, after reasonable warninge given to the tenaunte, without payment of anye fyne, but onlie one penye at his entrie and thauns comable rent, and to the same Humfrey fourtie shillinges. To Cecill Collinson and Agnes Dawson my servauntes to either tenne shillinges. To Richard Woode my servaunte a coat clothe and five shillinges. All the rest of my goodes to Elizabeth my wiffe, sole executrix. I ordene Mr John Gregorie, Mr Frances Colman, Christofer Marshall, Oliver Heywoode, and Robert Quernebie my sone, supervisors.

XXXV. THE WILL OF SIR THOMAS CHALONER,*

OF LONDON.

This is the laste will and Testament of me, Sr Thomas Challoner, of London, knyghte, made this thirtenthe daye of Octobre, in the seaventh yeare of the Reigne of Elizabeth, Quene (1565). concerninge the order of my goodes, chattels, and other thinges weh God in greate mercie hath bestowed on me. And where I have, by indenture bearinge date the eleaventh daye of this moneth of Octobre, soulde to the Right honorable Sr William Cicill, Sr William Peter, Sr John Mason, knightes, Christopher Wraye, John Salven,

* Son of Roger Chaloner, citizen and mercer, of London. He had office under Henry VIII, and was granted Guisborough Priory. He died 14 October, 1565, and was buried in St. Paul's Cathedral. His wife was daughter of Edward Frodsham, of Cheshire. They had an only son, Thomas. (See Dict. Nat. Biog.) Thomas, son of Robert Chaloner, of Claydon Steeple, Bucks. Adm. Gray's Inn, 13 Nov., 1583.

Dene Drurye, esquiers, and Thomas Wilbraham, gentleman, all my landes upon an especiall truste that they should dispose the same accordinge to a declaracon hearinge date wth the saide Indenture, as also in this my last will. And I geve to the saide Thomas all that my lease weh I have in the Rectorye and Busshopps mannor of Steple Claydon, in the countie of Buckingham, to have the same lease to the said Thomas, his executors, to his owne use, provided alwaies I will that if it fortune the saide Thomas, sonne of the saide Audrie, to departe out of this life before he shall accomplishe the age of one and twentie yeres, that then the lease shalbe to such person as then shalbe the righte heire of me the saide Sr Thomas Chaloner, provided alwayes that the profittes shalbe taken by the said Sir William Cicill. And to thende that the saide Thomas, sonne of the saide Audrie, maye after my decease be well brought upp in the feare of God and good learninge I doe most humblie desire the Right Honourable Sr William Cicill, knighte, Secretarie to oure said Ladie the Quenes Majestie, that it may please him to take the order, rule, and custodie of the bodie of the saide Thomas, sonne of the saide Audrie. And I make Sr William Cicill, the saide Audrie, and the saide Thomas sonne of the said Audrie myne executors, and overseers I mak and Sr Hughe Pawlett, knight. I geve Audrie my wife my lease of my house nere St John's, wherin I doe nowe dwell, and all my houshoulde stuffe in the same, my apparil for my bodie onlie excepted. To the saide Audrie theis percells of my plate, that is to saye one dozen of silver spoones and a standinge beere cupp of silver parcell gilte. I will that Robert Farnham my servaunte shall have for terme of his life thirtene poundes six shillinges and eight pence, and Roger Houker my servaunte a rente of six poundes thirtene shillinges foure pence, and Henry Kynge my servaunt a rente of foure poundes, and Richarde Parcevall my servaunte fiftie thre shillinges and foure pence. I will that my sister . . . Bowyer shall have a rente of tenne poundes. I will that William Tempest my servaunt shall have for terme of his life all that fearme in Gisburghe, in the saide Countie of Yorke, which Richarde Massingall now hath, that Roberte Poplaye my servaunte have one other farme in Gisburghe, late in the occupacon of Christopher Hudson, that Rafe Sargeant shall have one fearme in Gisburghe, in the tenure of Cicilie Tomsonne. I give to Rafe Skedmere my servaunte tenne poundes, to Thomas Dalwood

To be buried in the parishe churche of St Martyn Orgar, in the warde of Candleweke streate in London, where I was late parishioner, nere unto the place where Dame Alyce Huett, my late welbeloved wief, lyeth. To the repayringe of the churche beforesayde iij li. vj s. viij d. To Mr Wythers, parson of the same, iiij gardes of blacke clothe for a gowne. To the pore people within the warde of Candleweke v li. * Son of Edmund Hewet, of Wales, co. York. He was one of the most successful merchants of the times, and Lord Mayor of London in 1559. He died 21 January, 156. He had an only daughter, Anne, married to Sir Edward Osborne, ancestor of the Dukes of Leeds. The well-known legend is that Osborne was apprenticed to Sir William Hewet, who lived on London Bridge. A maid let his daughter fall into the Thames, when Osborne jumped in and rescued her. (See Familie Minorum Gentium, Harl. Soc. 1028.)
