A FEW DEVOTIONAL HELPS

FOR

Lent and Passion-tide.

ON ASH WEDNESDAY, AND ON ALL WEDNESDAYS UNTIL PASSION SUNDAY.

"Dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return."

How justly, my GOD, have I deserved to be cut off in the midst of my days, and that Thou shouldest have given me no time of repentance! How is it that Thou hast suffered me so long a time? O my most gracious Redeemer, it is to Thee-to Thy merits-Thy precious blood-shedding-and Thy ever-living Intercession that I owe this sparing mercy; and by Thy grace, I resolve, to be truly and entirely penitent.

O holy and longsuffering GOD! I prostrate myself before Thee, in the deepest self-abasement of which I am capable.

B

Truly I have gone astray like a sheep that is lost; seek Thy servant, O LORD; for that which was lost Thou camest to seek and to save. And do Thou, my FATHER and my GOD, grant me now to be wholly converted to Thee; make my proud heart humble and contrite, and send Thy HOLY GHOST to renew in me the fruits of repentance. These favours I ask through JESUS CHRIST, Thy SON, our LORD. Our FATHER, &c.

LORD, have mercy.
CHRIST, have mercy.
LORD, have mercy.
O CHRIST, hear us.

O CHRIST, graciously hear us.

Amen.

O GOD the FATHER, of Heaven, have mercy upon us.

O GOD the SON, Redeemer of the world, have mercy upon us.

O GOD the HOLY GHOST, have mercy upon us.

O HOLY TRINITY, One GOD, have mercy

upon us.

O LORD JESU CHRIST, the Pattern of abstinence as of all other virtues, Who hast taught us, that not by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of GOD, doth man live; enable us,

we beseech Thee, to taste the richness of Thy word, that coming not for the meat which perisheth, we may live soberly and piously in this world, and serve Thee alone, the Living GOD, Who dost so mercifully feed us. Amen.

O all-pitying JESU, Thou art my Hope and my Trust, my Life, my Health, and my Resurrection-I pray and entreat Thee, raise me up from the sleep of sin, for I am Thy creature, and the work of Thy Hands. O LORD, vile as I am, own me for Thine own. Say unto my soul, I am thy Salvation. Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed. Turn me, and I shall be turned. O, by Thy fasting and abstinence, Good LORD, deliver me.

O merciful Redeemer! by all Thou hast done and suffered for poor sinners, grant to them all, I beseech Thee, the grace of true repentance.

O JESUS! have mercy on the poor, the sick and the dying. Comfort all who are in affliction. Ŏ most powerful Advocate and Intercessor, I especially entreat Thee for the obdurate, the unconverted, and the unbelieving.

Eternal FATHER, I offer Thee the precious Blood of JESUS CHRIST, in expiation of my sins, and for the wants of the whole Church.
