TO SHAKSPEARE;

IN COMMEMORATION OF THE NATAL DAY OF ENGLAND'S MOST ILLUSTRIOUS DRAMATIC BARD;

Written expressly for the Grand Festival at Stratford-uponAvon, 23d of April, 1830, by ISAAC COWEN.

THE MUSIC BY CHARLES SALAMAN.

RECITATIVE.-ACCOMP.

Arise from Mermaid cave,

Descend from starry sphere,

Spirits of melody! Appear! appear!

On flaming pinions borne, with heavenly sound,

Record his deathless fame on Avon's hallow'd ground.

Rise, swelling peals of sacred transport, rise,
While tuneful thunders wake the echoing skies;
Soft-breathing April, fragant incense bring,
And warble sweetly, ye young birds of Spring.
