The DFE is committed to the concept of school-based training for ITT students. The use of schoolteachers as the school-based expert to assist in the training of the student has given rise to the re-introduction, after 100 years, of the mentor. The use of mentors in the secondary schools has already started with students currently spending more than 60% of their training in the classroom. There are plans to expand this into the primary sector.
