ORDER OF DIVINE SERVICE,

FOR

SUNDAY AFTERNOON.

[The Minister standing: the Congregation sitting.]

Minister.—Let us Worship and Glorify God, with all solemnity, and in spirit, and in truth.

[blocks in formation]

Let us

Minister.-Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we adore thee for the Redemption of this guilty and condemned world: we adore thee for the means of grace, of mercy, and of peace, which thou hast given us through the dispositions of thy Providence, and the operations of the Holy Ghost. Grant O God, we beseech thee, that these means of thy grace and of thy love towards us, may prove effectual to our salvation and glory.

Congregation.-O Lord, let thy goodness towards us prove our salvation and glory.

Minister. For these blessed ends, O our God, be pleased to vouchsafe unto us freely and abundantly thy Holy Spirit, that so thy dealings with us in thy kingdom, may instruct and root and ground us, in the knowledge of the gospel of Christ in all its parts; may keep us in the love of God, bringing forth the fruits of holiness abundantly; and finally may we have a

glorious entrance into thy eternal kingdom of love and holiness, of glory and immortality.

Congregation.-O Lord, give us thy Spirit, and keep us in the love of God unto eternal life.

Minister. We adore thee, O Father of mercies, for all thy arrangements and appointments in thy house and kingdom. We adore thee for this holy day, we adore thee for the public ministrations of the gospel, and we bless thy name that we in thy providence are so circumstanced as to be able to wait on thee with convenience and comfort on this thy day, and in this thy house.—We thank thee, O our Father, for thy goodness to us in the former part of this day. Give us thy blessing, we pray thee, with all that we were then engaged in: and now, O Lord God, condescend again to come into this house, and let thy presence and thy glory shine on us and around us, and fill us all with thy love, and with thy grace and peace and joy, through Jesus Christ our Lord and our Saviour.

Congregation.-O Lord, let thy presence fill this house, and every heart, this afternoon through Jesus Christ.

Minister.-Most Blessed God, be with us, we pray thee, in all our services, and grant that every thing may be so conducted, and so attended to, that thy name may be glorified in us, and that our souls may richly profit by thy ministrations for our instruction, comfort, and edification. Guide us, O Lord, into the knowledge of thy holy word whilst it is read and expounded to us: shed thy Spirit upon us, that we may truly pour out our hearts unto thee in prayer: and may we sing to thy praise, in the melody of our hearts. Congregation Graciously, O our God, guide us and bless us now in all our services.

Minister-Almighty God, the Father of the whole family of heaven and earth, be pleased to look down in thy great benignity on all the assemblies of thy

people in every part of the world, now waiting upon thee as we are: may grace and mercy and peace be abundantly multiplied upon them all. O Lord God, enlighten, and sanctify, and unite all thy people: let there be one holy, enlightened, and united church over all the earth. Bless, O God, thy Ministers, that they may guide all thy flocks to knowledge, holiness, and unity.

Congregation.-O Lord, guide all thy Ministers, and all thy flocks, by thy Holy Spirit, to knowledge, holiness, and unity.

Minister.-O Lord God, we pray very especially for this flock and this congregation, and thy Servant set over them. O let us all act singly and only for thy glory and may we all obtain the plaudit of our Great Judge and Redeemer in the day of his appearing: 0 may he then say unto us all,-" Well done good and faithful servants, enter into the joy of your Lord."

:

Congregation.-O Lord Jesus Christ, grant us thy plaudit in thy day of glory.

Minister.--Almighty and most merciful God, we beseech thee to have mercy on all conditions of people now in this assembly, on all in this town, on all in this nation, and on all throughout the world. Bless all that are in authority among us: pity all that are in distress: have mercy on the proud, the ignorant, the erring and the vicious: let the light of the Truth where it shines, shine into all hearts; and let the glorious light of the gospel shine over all the earth, and enlighten all nations, kindreds, and people, to the glory of thy most holy name in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Congregation.-O Lord our God, be merciful unto all conditions of people, here and everywhere, and may the glory of God speedily fill all the earth.

Minister-Our Father in heaven, hallowed be thy name: Thy kingdom come: Thy will be done on earth, as it is done in heaven: Give us this day our

daily bread: Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us: And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and

ever: amen.

Congregation.-Amen, and amen.

[All standing.]

Minister.-Let us now sing to the praise and the glory of God:-" Oft as &c." [pronouncing the two first lines of the following hymn :-Or, referring to some other, and pronouncing the two first lines of it.]

1. Oft as I look upon the road
That leads to yonder blest abode,
I feel distressed and fearful:
So many foes the passage throng,
I am so weak, and they so strong,
How can my soul be cheerful!

2. But when I think of Him whose power
Can save me in a trying hour,

And place on Him reliance,
My soul is then ashamed of fear;
And though ten thousand foes appear,
I bid them all defiance.

3. The dangerous road I then pursue,
And keep the glorious prize in view;
With joyful hope elated:

Strong in the Lord, in Him alone;
Where He conducts, I follow on,
With ardour unabated.

4. O Lord, each day renew my strength,
And let me see thy face at length,
With all thy people yonder :
With them in heaven thy love declare,
And sing thy praise for ever there,
With gratitude and wonder.

[Still standing.]

Minister. In the view of Reading and Hearing God's Holy Word,-Let us Pray.

[All kneel.]

Minister.-Almighty God, we adore thee for thy compassions towards our Ignorant and Depraved Race. We praise thee for that Volume of Instructions thou hast given us, that volume which teaches us respecting the Redemption of the world by thy Son Jesus Christ, which teaches us how we may be sanctified by the Holy Ghost, and be brought at length into thy Divine Presence, to receive thy Eternal Blessing, in the Fulness of Joy for evermore.

Congregation.-Glory be to thy name, O God, for the Volume of Redemption, and Sanctification, and Eternal Life.

Minister.-Most Blessed God, how suitable is this book for our case! Who knows our condition but thee, and who can be our Instructor but thee? Thou knowest our frame, and thou rememberest that we are dust, and thou hast dealt out thy instructions to us according to our frame and our vileness. O Lord, have mercy upon us, and enable us most humbly to receive all that thou hast taught us in this Volume-all Perfect and Divine.

Congregation.-O Lord, enable us to receive the Instructions of this Volume-all Perfect and Divine.

Minister.-Most Blessed Father, we adore thee for bringing us together at this time to read with one accord publicly and solemnly in thy heavenly volume. Give us grace, we beseech thee, that we may rightly read herein, and rightly attend to what may be brought before us as we read. Let all our minds be seasoned with humility, and with gratitude, that the words
