are among the stars, proclaiming the Omnipotence which placed them in the heavens: below, the answering wave whose surge replies to the anthem of the starry host, sounding in awful depth the strophe to the hymn: The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament showeth his handiwork. Deep, calleth unto deep, to show the works of the Lord, and his wonders. Between these mighty responses, what indeed is man.

Alone upon the sea! The stars may weep man's death, and the waters be his pall: but the stars will shine on, as if he had never been, and the wave may not answer the question, Where is he?-till the sea gives up its dead. A night upon the dark water teaches us how deep the awe to be alone with God. The disciples, as they toiled against contrary winds and were weary, felt all the fear which such a change, from the crowd to this deep solitude, could inspire. While their little barque was tempest-tost, and their hearts were weary within them by reason of their pondering upon the events of that day; while they shared in the hardness of heart of the multitude, their doubts became positive terrors, and they shrieked for fear. As their vessel, tossed by the waves, now ascended as if to heaven, and now descended to the depths; as they reeled to and fro, and staggered like drunken men, at their wits' end with the storm, they were made frantic with fright. Calm and majestic as he had moved along the sands of the shore, Jesus walked upon the sea. Where he planted his footsteps, the elements, owning their Lord, were hushed into obedience.
