COURTEOUS READER, TF thou art acquainted with the divine life, I need not inform thee, that although all the acts and exercises of devotion are feet and delightful; yet we never refemble the blessed worshippers above more than when we are joining together in public devotion, and with bearts and lips unfeigned finging praises to Him who fitteth upon the throne for ever. Confequently, Hymns composed for such a purpose ought to abound much in thanksgiving, and ta be of fuch a nature, that all who attend may join in them without being obliged to fing lies, or not fing at all.-Upon this plan the following Collection is founded. They are intended purely for focial worship, and fo altered in Some particulars, that I think all may fafely concur in ufing them. They are short, becaufe I think three or four ftanzas, with a doxology, are fufficient to be fung at one time. I am no great friend to long fermons, long prayers, or long hymns; they generally weary infead of edifying, and therefore, I think, Should be avoided by those who prefide in any public worshipping affembly. Befides, as the generality of those who receive the Gospel are commonly the poor of the flock, I have ftudied cheapness 39 x 688 1 as well as concifenefs.
