Foote's pieces excellent. Mrs. Green, a very good fubstitute for Mrs. Clive. Mrs. Hopkins, a very bad one: Mrs, Clive, peculiarly happy in low humour; who with a most disagreeable face, and perfon, was always the joy of her audience, when she kept clear of any thing ferious or genteel. Mrs. W. Barry, a very tolerable fecond Woman. Mifs Miller, nothing but partial managerical favour could have produced, or supported, this Lady.

Thus the DRAMATIC CENSOR takes cordial leave of the reader, confcious of many faults, not without hopes of fome merit; and wishes, that if any other work, upon this plan, and fubject, fhould hereafter be started, there may be more fubjects for praife, and fewer for cenfure.

We cannot difmifs this volume, without gratefully acknowledging the general encouragement with which the public have honoured our critical purfuit, and the felf approbation we feel from having preferved one uniform fpirit of impartiality through the whole, agreeable to our free and unbiaffed judgment. As a candid review of the stage was the only motive for this undertaking, and a fecond edition is now preparing for the prefs, we take this opportunity of foliciting the affiftance of the ingenious in general, in order to render the work as perfect and pleasing as poffible. At the fame time, we hereby promife, that whatever alVOL II, $ss terations

terations we may be favoured with, if not conve nient to incorporate them into the body of the work, fhall, at least, appear in notes with the author's name, if required, by which the public may form a proper judgment of our performance, and easily perceive the complexion of our principles: fuch correfpondents as favour us with any improvements, by fending their addrefs to the publisher, fhall have a fet of the new edition, handfomely bound, fent to them gratis, as foon as it is published.

ANSWER to our late CORRESPONDENTS.

AFTER thanking A. B. and E. M. for the

friendly correfpondence with which the Dramatic Cenfor has been indulged, we declare ourselves hapру in the idea of affiftance; for a fecond edition, every remark for enrichment, or correction, fhall be carefully attended to, every judicious alteration adopted, and every poffible step taken to make the work complete; we lament the indifpofition of our friend E. M. and are to regret that a fimilar impediment among ourselves, prevented this number's appearing in due time; we have at present no fixed refolution, of extending the Cenfor beyond the limits at first propofed, fhould fuch a defign take place, timely notice will be given for correspondents; A. B. and E. M. with other friends, may reft affured we have not been fo incivilly curious as to employ the leaft thought in finding out the real names of thofe perfons who only sign initials.
