And hath raised up a horn of salvation to us in the house of David His servant.

As He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets who are from the beginning.

Salvation from our enemies: and from the hand of all that hate us.

:

To perform mercy to our fathers and to remember His holy testament.

The oath which he swore to Abraham our father: that He would grant to us:

That being delivered from the hand of our enemies we may serve Him without fear,

In holiness and justice before Him: all our days.

And thou, child, shalt be called the Prophet of the Highest for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways.

To give knowledge of salvation to His people unto the remission of their sins.

Through the bowels of the mercy of our God in which the Orient from on high hath visited us.

To enlighten them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death: to direct our feet into the way of peace.

Glory, &c.

Ant. In the way of peace and prosperity may the omnipotent and merciful Lord direct us; may the Angel Raphael accompany us on our way, that we may return to our home in peace, in safety, and in joy. Lord, have mercy on us. Christ, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy on us.

Our Father (secretly).

V. And lead us not into temptation.

R. But deliver us from evil.

V. Save thy servants.

Amen.

R. Who hope in Thee, O my God.

V. Send us help, O Lord, from the sanctuary.

R. And defend us out of Sion.

V. Be unto us, O Lord, a tower of strength.

R. From the face of the enemy.

V. Let not the enemy prevail against us. R. Nor the son of iniquity approach to hurt us.

V. Blessed be the Lord day by day.

R. May the God of our salvation render our journey prosperous.

V. Show unto us Thy ways, O Lord.
R. And teach us Thy paths.

V. Let our steps be directed.

R. To keeping the way of Thy command

ments.

V. The crooked ways shall be made straight.

R. And the rough places smooth.

V. God hath given his angels charge over thee.

R. To keep thee in all thy ways.

V. O Lord, hear my prayer.

R. And let my cry come unto Thee.

Let us pray.

O God, who didst make the children of Israel to pass dryshod through the midst of the sea; and who by the leading of a star didst show to the three kings the way unto Thee grant to us, we beseech Thee, a prosperous journey and a quiet time, that under the guidance of Thy holy Angel, we may happily arrive at the place whither we are going, and at length reach the haven of eternal salvation.

O God, who didst lead Abraham Thy servant out of Ur of the Chaldeans, and didst keep him unhurt through all the ways

of his pilgrimage, vouchsafe, we beseech Thee, to keep us Thy servants; be unto us, O Lord, a help in our going forth, a solace on the way, a shade from the heat, a shelter from the rain and cold, a chariot in weariness, a defence in adversity, a staff in slippery places, a haven in shipwreck, that Thou being our Leader, we may prosperously reach the end of our journey, and at length return in safety to our home.

Give ear, we beseech Thee, O Lord, to our supplications, and dispose the way of Thy servants in the paths of Thy salvation, that amid all the changes of this journey and of this life, we may ever be protected by Thy aid.

Grant, we beseech Thee, Almighty God, that this Thy family may walk in the way of salvation, and following the counsels of blessed John Thy precursor, may safely attain to him whom he foretold, our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen. V. Let us proceed in peace.

R In the name of the Lord.

Amen.

PRAYERS FOR A HAPPY DEATH.

O Lord Jesus, God of goodness and Father of mercies, I approach to Thee with a contrite and humble heart; to Thee I recommend the last hour of my life and the decision of my eternal doom.

When my feet, benumbed with death, shall admonish me that my mortal course is drawing to an end, Merciful Jesus, have mercy on me.

When my eyes, dim and troubled at the approach of death, shall fix themselves on Thee, my last and only Support, Merciful Jesus, have mercy on me.

When my face, pale and livid, shall inspire the beholders with pity and dismay; when my hair, bathed in the sweat of death, and stiffening on my head, shall forbode my approaching end, Merciful Jesus, have mercy on me.

When my ears, soon to be for ever shut to the discourse of men, shall be open to hear the irrevocable decree which is to cut me off from the number of the living, Merciful Jesus, have mercy on me.

When my imagination, agitated by dreadful spectres, shall be sunk in an abyss of
