With bands of noble gentlemen,

And banners wav'd before; And gentle youth and maidens gay, And snowy plumes they wore;It would have been a beauteous dream, -If it had been no more!

Alas, alas, fair Ines,

She went away with song,

35 With Music waiting on her steps,
And shoutings of the throng;
But some were sad, and felt no mirth,
But only Music's wrong,

40

In sounds that sang Farewell, Farewell,
To her you've loved so long.

Farewell, farewell, fair Ines,
That vessel never bore
So fair a lady on its deck,

Nor danc'd so light before,45 Alas for pleasure on the sea,

5

That walks beneath their light,

15 And breathes the love against thy cheek

And sorrow on the shore! The smile that blest one lover's heart Has broken many more!

RUTH 1827

She stood breast high amid the corn,1
Clasp'd by the golden light of morn,
Like the sweetheart of the sun,
Who many a glowing kiss had won.

On her cheek an autumn flush,
Deeply ripened;-such a blush

In the midst of brown was born,
Like red poppies grown with corn.

Round her eyes her tresses fell,

Which were blackest none could tell,
But long lashes veil'd a light,
That had else been all too bright.

And her hat, with shady brim,
Made her tressy forehead dim;-
Thus she stood amid the stooks,2
Praising God with sweetest looks:-

Sure, I said, heav'n did not mean Where I reap thou shouldst but glean, Lay thy sheaf adown and come,

Share my harvest and my home.

I REMEMBER, I REMEMBER 1827

I remember, I remember,

The house where I was born, The little window where the sun Came peeping in at morn;

1 wheat shocks of grain
