1 Cor. x. 9. Nor let us try the Lord, as fome of them alfo tried him, and, whovo, perifhed, or died, by ferpents.

1 Cor. x. 10. Nor murmur ye, as fome of them alfo murmured, and, awλolo, perished, or died, by the destroyer.

2 Cor. iv. 9. Perfecuted, but not forfaken; caft down, but not, awoλλuμevo, destroyed, or killed. Heb. i. 11. They will perish, auto a@02817α1, but thou remaineft. See v. 12; and Ifa. xxxiv. 2, 4. James i. 11. The flower falleth, and the beauty of its appearance, aπwλelo, perifheth, or dieth away.

2 Pet. iii. 6. The world having been overflowed with water, awλelo, was deftroyed; i. e. the inhabitants of it died.

Jude 5. The Lord having faved his people out of the land of Egypt, afterwards aπwheσev, destroyed, or put to death, those who believed not. Comp. Ifaiah xxxiv. 2.

Jude 11. A whole, they have destroyed or brought death upon themselves, by gainfaying, like Korah.

II. To lofe life; this life; the life after this.

Matt. x. 39. He who findeth his life, awokera αύτην, fhall lofe it; and ὁ απολεσας, he who lofeth his life, &c.

Whofoever defireth to fave his life,

32, 33.

απολέσει αυτην, fhall lofe it; and, ός αν απολέση, whofoever shall lofe his life for my fake, &c.

Luke ix. 25. What is a man profited, if he gain the whole world, εαύλον δε απολεσας η ζημιωθείς, and lofe, or forfeit, himself. Thefe words are also used synonymously, Matt. xvi. 25, 26; Mark viii. 35, 36.

John xii. 25. He who loveth his life, awoλeres any, fhall lofe it.

III. To lofe any thing.

Matt. x. 42; Mark ix. 41. Whofoever shall give one of these little ones a cup of cold water only, &c. un awokson, he fhall by no means lose his reward. Luke xv. 4. Having a hundred fheep, xai awoAeras, if he lofe one of them.

Luke xv. 8. What woman, having ten pieces of filver, ɛav awodɛon, if she lose one piece, &c.

Luke xv. 9. I have found the piece, nawoλeσag which I had loft.

John vi. 12. Gather the fragments which remain, that nothing, awokna, may be loft.

John vi. 39. This is the will of him who fent me, that of all whom he has given me, μη απολέσω au, I fhould lofe none.

John xvii. 12. Those whom thou gavest me I have preferved, and none of them, awλETO, is loft. John xviii. 9. Of those whom thou gavest me, κι απώλεσα εξ αυτων εδενα, I have loft none.

2 John 8. Take heed to yourselves, va un awodowμey, that we lofe not those things which we have done.

Matt. xviii. 14. It is not the will of your heavenly Father that one of thefe little ones, απολήται, fhould be loft.

IV. To go aftray, or wander.

Matt. x. 6. Go rather to, тa gobalα тα αwoAwλora, the loft or wandering fheep of the house of Ifrael. Comp. 1 Pet. ii. 25.

Matt. xv. 24. I am not sent but to, ra węоbαтα τα απολωλότα, the loft or wandering theep of the houfe of Ifrael.

Mått. xviii. 11; Luke xix. 10. The Son of man is come to feek and to fave, το απολωλος, that which was loft, or gone aftray.

Luke xv. 4. What man having a hundred fheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety-nine in the defert, and go after, To Toλwλos, that which is loft, or gone aftray.

Luke xv. 6. I have found my fheep, Tо aπoλwλos, which was loft, or gone aftray.

Luke xv. 24. This my fon, añoλwλos ny, was loft, or gone aftray, and is found.

Luke xv. 32. We fhould be glad, for this thy brother, anoλwλos nv, was loft, or gone aftray, and is found.

Mark i. 24; Luke iv. 34. Art thou come, aoXeσaι nuas, to deftroy us? Wakefield, to punish us. In the parallel place, Matt. viii. 29, Bataviσal quas, to torment us. Schleufner, ut nos potestate noftra privares. See Mark i. 34; 1 Cor. i. 19.

1 Cor. i. 19. It is written, amoλw, I will destroy the wisdom of the wife; v. 20, to make foolish, or impotent.

1 Cor. viii. 11, 13. Through thy knowledge, will not thy weak brother, añoλα, perish, or be induced to offend, or act contrary to his confcience? v. 13. Wherefore, if food, σxavdanige Tov adenqovus, caufe my brother to offend, I will not eat flesh during my life, left, σnavdaλow, I caufe my brother to offend. Here απολλυμι and σκανδαλίζω are ufed in the fame fenfe.

Rom. xiv. 15. If thy brother, λUTTEITA, be disquieted because of thy food, un añoλλve, destroy not him by thy food, &c. i. e. do not difquiet him by leading him to eat contrary to his conviction. Here λυπέω and απολλυμι are ufed fynonymoufly.

Matt. viii. 25; Mark iv. 38; Luke viii. 24. His difciples awoke him, faying, Lord, fave us, aπouμɛla, we perish, or are in danger of lofing our lives. Comp. Rom. viii. 36; 1 Cor. xv. 31; 2 Cor. iv. 11.

Luke xv. 7. How many hired fervants of my father have abundance of food, and, añoλλuμai, I perish, or, am in danger of dying with hunger.

Matt. ix. 17; Mark ii. 22; Luke v. 37. Nor do men put new wine into old leathern bottles, otherwise the wine will be fpilt, and the bottles, απολείται, will be marred.

I Cor. i. 18. The preaching of the cross is foolishnefs, τοις μεν απολλυμένοις, to thofe that are loft, i. e. to those who are in a state of vice and unbelief; but to us that are faved, or, in a state of salvation, it is the power of God. Comp. Rom. i. 16.

2 Theff. ii. 10 to 12. Whofe appearance is according to the working of Satan, with falfe miracles, &c. εν τοις απολλυμένοις, among thole that are loft, because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be faved, &c. fo that all will be condemned who believe not the truth, but have pleasure in iniquity.

VI. ATоλλμ, applied to the future life.

John iii. 15, 16. That every one who believeth in him, μŋ añoλntα, may not perish, but have everlafting life: i. e. may not die again after his refurrection.

John x. 28. I give unto them everlasting life, και 8 μη απολωνται εις τον αιώνα, and they fall never perish, (be destroyed, Wakefield.)

Rom. ii. 12. For as many as have finned without law, añoλ8)α, will perish also without law, (will be fentenced to death, Wakefield,) in the day when God will judge the secret things of men, &c. Schleufner
