CAP. XVI.

ABUIT in memoria et cura peragrans regiones Paulus, et Christum hominibus ac salutem in eo nuncians, ut egentibus et inopibus Christi sequacibus Hierosolimæ, ex fidelium liberalitate et gratia, subsidium victus collectum illis convehetur. Partim enim Iudeorum impietate et injuriis, quibus Christi nomen erat odiosum, partim frugum inopia et famis, quam fore predixit Agabus, extrema penuria cruciati erant.

Est verisimile Paulum sibimet ipsi nusquam nec petivisse quicquam, nec, si quando quid oblatum fuit ultro et datum, 2 Cor. xi. accepisse ; preterquam a Macedonibus, ut ipse testatur in secunda epistola ad Corinthios. In Grecia quidem et in Achaia protestatus est accepturum se nihil; non quod non 1 Cor. ix. licuerit; nam, ut scribit in hac prima ad Corinthios: Dominus ordinavit, qui evangelium enunciat, de evangelio vivere; sed ne occasio detur ulla malivolis et invidis obtrectandi ; utque ex omni parte integerrimus sit suus labor, sitque nusquam locus scandali et offensionis vel levissimus. Quam etiam integritatem abstinentiamque manuum apud Ephesios in Asia servavit, sicuti testatur idem ipse Paulus, auctore Luca. Qui ultimo discedens ab Ephesiis, tunc Hierosolimam profectus, cum illis collocutus hæc verba habuit: Argentum et aurum aut vestem nullius concupivi, sicut ipsi scitis; quoniam quæ mihi opus erant et hiis qui mecum sunt, ministraverunt manus istæ.

Erat tamen ei precipua cura, ut sanctis, qui erant Hierosolimæ, subveniatur. Quam elimosinam in secunda ad Cor2 Cor. viii. inthios vocat benedictionem, quod Grece elogia dicitur; quæ sunt munera quæ minutili sacerdotes ad sinodum convenientes, majoribus sacerdotibus summatibusque deportant.
