in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster-box of oìntment, 38 And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment. 39 Now, when the Pharisee which had bidden him, saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who, and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner. 40 And Jesus answering, said unto him, Símon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Máster, say òn. 41 There was a certain credítor, which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pénce, and the other fifty. 42 And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most? 43 Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgàve most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged. 44 And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thy house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head. 45 Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman, since the time I came in, hath not ceased to kiss my feet. 46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment. 47 Wherefore, I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much : but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little. 48 And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven. 49 And they that sat at meat with him, began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also? 50 And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in pèace.

THE PARABLE OF THE SOWER.

LUKE VIII.-4 And when much people were gathered together, and were come to him out of every city, he spake by a parable: 5 A sower went out to sow his seed and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devòured it. 6 And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it with

ered away, because it lacked moisture. 7 And some fell among thòrns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it. 8 And other fell on good ground, and sprang úp, and bare fruit a hundred-fòld. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. 9 And his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be? 10 And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in pàrables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand. 11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 12 Those by the way-side, are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. 13 They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with jòy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. 14 And that which fell among thorns, are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with càres, and riches, and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection. 15 But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.

16 No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed: but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light. 17 For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known, and come abroad. 18 Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whoso ever hath, to him shall be given: and whosoever hath not, from him shall taken even that which he seemeth to have.

40 And it came to pass, that when Jesus was returned, the people gladly received him: for they were all waiting for him.

41 And behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus' feet, and besought him that he would come into his house: 42 For he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying. But as he went, the people thronged him.

43 And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any, 44 Came behind him and touched

the border of his garment and immediately her issue of blood stanched. 45 And Jesus said, Who touched me? When all denied, Peter, and they that were with him, said, Máster, the multitude thròng thee, and prèss the, and sayest thou, Who touched me? 46 And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me. 47 And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately. 48 And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good còmfort: thy faith hath made the whole; go in peace.

49 While he yet spake, there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying to him, thy daughter is dead trouble not the Master. 50 But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not believe only, and she shall be made whole. 52 And when he came into the house, he suffered no man to go in, save Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the maiden. 52 And all bewailed her: but he said, Weep not: she is not dead, but sleepeth. 53 And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead. 54 And he put them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying, Máid, arise. 55 And her spirit came again, and she arose straightway and he commanded to give her meat. 56 And her parents were astonished but he charged them that they should tell no man what was done.

JESUS REBUKES THE DISCIPLES.

:

LUKE IX.-51 And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem, 52 And sent messengers before his face and they went and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him. 53 And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem. 54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lórd, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elías did? 55 But he turned, and rebùked them, and

said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are òf. 56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.

57 And it came to pass, that as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lórd, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. 58 And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. 59 And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lórd, suffer me first to go and bury my father. 60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their deàd: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. 61 And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell which are at home at my house. 62 And Jesus said unto him, No man having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

SEVENTY DISCIPLES SENT FORTH.

LUKE X.-1 After these things, the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city, and place, whither he himself would come. 2 Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few; pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest. 3 Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lámbs among wolves. 4 Carry neither púrse, nor scríp, nor shòes: and salùte no man by the way. 5 And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house. 6 And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again. 7 And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house. 8 And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you. 9 And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. 10 But into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say, 11 Even the very dust of your city which cleaveth on us, we do wipe

off against you: notwithstanding, be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nìgh unto you. 12 But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom than for that city. 13 Wo unto thee, Chorazin! wò unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon, which have been done in you, they had a great while ago repented, sitting in sackcloth and àshes. 14 But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you. 15 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to heaven, shalt be thrust down to hell. 16 He that heareth you, heareth mè; and he that despiseth you, despiseth mè; and he that despiseth me, despiseth him that sent me.

17 And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lórd, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. 18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. 19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Notwithstanding, in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

20

21 In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thànk thee, O Father, Lōrd of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prúdent, and hast revealed them unto bàbes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight. 22 All things are delivered to me of my Father and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.

23 And he turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see. 24 For I tell you, That many pròphets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.

25 And behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Máster, what shall I dò to inherit eternal life? 26 He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou? 27 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy
