vant my father, we told him the words of my lord. 25 And our father said, Gò again, and buy us a little food. 26 And we said, We cannot go down: if our youngest brother be with us, then will we go down; for we may not see the man's face, except our youngest brother be with us. 27 And thy servant my father said unto us, Ye know that my wife bare me two sons; 28 And the one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces; and I saw him not sìnce. 29 And if ye take this also from me, and mischief befall him, ye shall bring down my gray hairs with sōrrow to the grave. 30 Now therefore, when I come to thy servant my father, and the lad be not with us; (seeing that his life is bound up in the lad's life ;) 31 It shall come to pass, he seeth that the lad is not with us, that he will die and thy servants shall bring down the gray hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to the grave. 32 For thy servant became surety for the lad unto my father, saying, If I bring him not unto thee, then I shall bear the blame to my father for ever. 33 Now, therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant abide instead of the lad a bondman to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brethren. 34 For how shall I go up to my father, and the lad be not with me? Lest peradventure I see the evil that shall come on my father.

GEN. XLV.-1 Then Joseph could not refrain himself before all them that stood by him; and he cried, Cause every man to go out from me: and there stood no man with him, while Joseph made himself known unto his brethren. 2 And he wept aloud and the Egyptians, and the house of Pharaoh, heard. 3 And Joseph said unto his brethren, I am Joseph: doth my father yet live? And his brethren could not answer him; for they were troubled at his presence. 4 And Joseph said unto his brethren, Come near to me, I pray you and they came near. And he said, I am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold into Egypt. 5 Now therefore, be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life. 6 For these two years hath the famine been in the land; and yet there are five years, in the which there shall neither be earing nor harvest. 7 And God sent me before you to preserve you a posterity in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance. 8 So now, it was not you that sent

me hither, but Gòd: and he hath made me a father to Phàraoh, and Lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt. 9 Hàste ye and go up to my father, and say unto him, Thus saith thy son Joseph, God hath made me lord of all Egypt; come down unto me, tarry not. 10 And thou shalt dwell in the land of Gòshen, and thou shalt be near unto me, thou and thy children, and thy chìldren's children, and thy flócks, and thy hérds, and all that thou hast. 11 And there will I nourish thee, (for yet there are five years of famine,) lest thou, and thy household, and all that thou hast, come to poverty. 12 And, behold, your eyes see, and the eyes of my brother Benjamin, that it is my mouth that speaketh unto you. 13 And ye shall tell my father of all my glòry in Egypt, and of all that ye have seen: and ye shall haste, and bring down my father hither. 14 And he fell upon his brother Benjamin's neck, and wept; and Benjamin wept upon his neck. 14 Moreover, he kissed àll his brethren, and wept upon them and after that his brethren talked with him.

25 And they went up out of Egypt, and came into the land of Canaan unto Jacob their father. 26 And told him, saying, Joseph is yet alive, and he is governor over all the land of Egypt. And Jacob's heart fainted, for he believed them not. 27 And they told him all the words of Joseph, which he had said unto them; and when he saw the waggons, which Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of Jacob their father revived. 28 And Israel said, It is enough: Joseph my son is yet alive: I will go and see him before I die.

MOSES AND THE BURNING BUS H.

Ex. 111.-1 Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Mìdian: and he led the flock to the back-side of the desert, and came to the mountain of Gòd, even to Hòreb. 2 And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a flame of fìre out of the midst of a bùsh: and he looked, and behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. 3 And Moses said, I will now turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt

4 And when the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said (o) Mōses, Mōses. And he said, Here am I'. 5 And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet; for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground. 6 Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.

7 And the Lord said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their task-masters; for I know their sorrows; 8 And I am come to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of the land unto a good land and a làrge, unto a land flowing with mìlk and hòney; unto the place of the Cànaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amòrites, and the Perìzzites, and the Hìvites, and the Jèbuzites. 9 Now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel is come unto me and I have also seen the oppression wherewith the Egyptians oppress them. 10 Come now, therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.

11 And Moses said unto God, Who am I', that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt? 12 And he said, Certainly I will be with thee: and this shall be a token unto thee that I have sent thee; When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain. 13 And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? 41 And God said unto Moses, I AM THẤT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

MOSES BEFORE PHARAOH.

Ex. IV.-1 And Moses answered, and said, But, behold, they will not believe me, nor hearken unto my voice for they will say, The Lord hath not appeared unto thee. 2 And the Lord said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A ròd. 3 And he said, Cast it on the ground. And he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent: and Moses fled from before it. 4 And the Lord said unto Moses, Put forth thine hand, and take it by the tail. And he put forth his hand and caught it, and it became a ròd in his hănd: 5 That they may believe that the Lord God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath appeared unto thee.

6 And the Lord said furthermore unto him, Put now thine hand into thy bosom. And he put his hand into his bosom; and, when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous as snow. 7 And he said, Put thine hand into thy bosom again. And he put his hand into his bosom agáin, and plucked it out of his bosom; and, behold, it was turned again as his other flesh. 8 And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe thee, neither hearken to the voice of the first sign, that they will believe the voice of the latter sign. 9 And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe also these two signs, neither hearken unto thy voice, that thou shalt take of the water of the river, and pour it upon the dry land, and the water, which thou takest out of the river, shall become blood upon the dry land.

10 And Moses said unto the Lord, O my Lord, I am not èloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue. 11 And the Lord said unto him, Who hath made man's mouth? or who maketh the dumb or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? Have not I the Lord? 12 Now therefore gò, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say. 13 And he said, O my Lord, send, I pray thee, by the hand of him whom thou wilt send. 14 And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Moses, and he said, Is not Aaron the Levite thy brother? I know that he can speak well. And also, behold he cometh forth to meet thee; and when he seeth thee, he will be glad in his heart.

15

And thou shalt speak unto him, and put words in his mouth, and I will be with thy mouth, and with his mouth, and will teach you what ye shall do.

PASSAGE OF THE ISRAELITES THROUGH THE
RED SEA.

Ex. xiv.-19 And the angel of God, which went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them: 20 And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these : so that the one came not near the other all the night. 21 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. 22 And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand and on their left.

23 And the Egyptians pursued, and went in after them. to the midst of the sea, even all Pharaoh's horses, his cháriots, and his horsemen. 24 And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the Lord looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians. 25 And took off their chariot wheels, that they drove them heavily: so that the Egyptians said (=)* Let us flee from the face of Israel; for the Lord fighteth for them against the Egyptians.

26 And the Lord said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand over the sea, that the waters may come again upon the Egyptians, upon their chàriots, and upon their horsemen. 27 And Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to his strength when the morning appeared; and the Egyptians fled against it; and the Lord overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea.
