and them that sat with him, the king said unto the damsel ; “ Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee." And he sware unto her ; “ Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom.” And she went forth, and said unto her mother; “ What shall I ask ?" And she said ; “the head of John the Baptist.” And she came in straightway with haste unto the kng, and asked, saying ; " I will that thou give me by and by in a charger thehead of John the Baptist. And the king was exceeding sorry, yet for his oath's sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, he would not reject her. And immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought. And he went and beheaded him in prison; and brought his head in a charger and gave it to the damsel ; and the damsel gave it to her mother. And when his disciples heard of it, they came and took his

And he said unto them; yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while.” For there were many coming and going; and they had no leisure so much as to eat. And they departed into a desert place by ship privately.

great multitude; and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick. ML XL
And when it was evening his disciples came to him, saying ; “ This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals."
But Jesus said unto them; “ They need not depart; give ye them to eat.”
And they say unto him; “ We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.”
He said ; “Bring them hither to me."
And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves and the two fishes, and, looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. And they did all eat, and were filled ; and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full. When they were fille J vi.12. ed, he said unto his disciples ; " Gather up
the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.” And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.
And straightway Jesus constrained his dis- Muziv ciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. And when he had sent the multitudes
away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray. And when the evening was come, he was there alone. But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves ; for
the wind was contrary. And in the fourth watch of the night, Jesus went unto them walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were trou, bled, saying; “It is a spirit;" and they cried out for fear.
But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying; “ Be of good cheer, it is I; be not afraid.”
And Peter answered him and said ; "Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water."
And he said ; “ Come.”
And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid ; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying; Lord, save me.'
And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him; “O thou of little faith, wherefore dist thou doubt ?”
And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying ; " Of a truth thou art the Son of God."
And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret. And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about ; and brought unto him all that were diseased, and besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment; and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.

The day following, when the people which 1: stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was none other boat, there, save that one whereinto his disciples were entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples were gone away alone; (howbeit there came other boats from Tiberias nigh unto the place, where they did eat bread, after that the Lord had given thanks ;) when the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus.
And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him; “Rabbi, when camest thou hither?"
Jesus answered them and said ; “Verily, verily, I say unto you ; ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled. Labor not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you; for him hath God the Father sealed.”
Then said they unto him; “What shall
we do, that we might work the works of God ?"
Jesus answered and said unto them; “ This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath serit.”
They said therefore unto him ; " What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work ? Our fathers did eat manna in the desert, as it is written ; •He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'
Then Jesus said unto them; “Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.”
Then said they unto him; “ Lord, evermore give us this bread.”
And Jesus said unto them; “I bread of life ; he that cometh to me, shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me, shall never thirst. But I said unto you, that ye also have seen me, and believe not.
