From him shall be taken even that which he hath. 8 18 Luke For whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not,

20

From him shall be taken even that which he

seemeth to have.

Mat. Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, Mar. And he said, Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of God? or with what comparison shall we compare it?

Mar. It is like a grain of mustard seed,

Mat. The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard

seed,

Mat. Which a man took and sowed in his field.
Which indeed is the least of all seeds.

Mar. Which when it is sown in the earth,

Is less than all the seeds that be in the earth.

Mar. But when it is sown, it groweth up,

And becometh greater than all herbs, and shooteth out great branches.

Mat. But when it is grown,

It is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a

tree.

Mat. So that the birds of the air come and lodge in the

branches thereof.

Mar. So that the fowls of the air may lodge under the
shadow of it.

Sect. 53. The parable of the leaven.
comes to him the second time.

Christ's mother
Sect. 48.

Mat. Another parable spake he unto them, The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.

Mat. All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables,

And without a parable spake he not unto them. Mar. And with many such parables spake he the word unto them, as they were able to hear it.

But without a parable spake he not unto them. Mat. That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.

19 Luke Then came to him his mother and his brethren, and could not come at him for the press. And it was told by certain, which said, Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to see thee. And he answered

Mat. Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house; and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares in the held. He answered and said unto them, lie that soweth, &c. to ver. 44.

Mar.

And when they were alone, he expounded all things to the disciples.

Sect. 57. Jesus goes away to Nazareth.

Mar. And he went out from thence,

And came into his own couutry, and his disciples follow him.

Mat. And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed thence.

And when he was come into his own country,

Mat. He taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said,

Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?

Mar. And when the Sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue; and many hearing him were astonished, saying,

From whence hath this man these things? and
what wisdom is this which is given unto him,
that even such mighty works are wrought by
his hands?

Mar. Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary,
The brother of James and Joses, and of Juda
and Simon?

Mat. Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother
called Mary?

And his brethren, James, and Joseș, and Simon, and Judas?

Mat. And his sisters, are they not all with us?

Whence then hath this man all these things?
And they were offended in him.

Mar. And are not his sisters here with us?

And they were offended at him.

Mar. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without

Mar.

But in his own country, and among his own

kin, and in his own house.

Mat. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour,

Save in his own country, and in his own house. Mat. And he did not many mighty works there, because of their unbelief.

Mar. And he could there do no mighty work,

Mar. Save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them. And he marvelled because of their unpelief. And he went round about the villages, teachJing.

Sect. 55. The twelve apostles are sent out in the country of Nazareth. See § 40.

Mar. And he calleth unto him the twelve,

And began to send them forth by two and two, And gave them power over unclean spirits. 1Luke Then he called his twelve disciples together,

And gave them power and authority over
all devils, and to cure diseases.

And he seat them to preach the kingdom of
God, and to heal the sick.

3 Luke And he said unto them, Take nothing for your jour-
aey,

Neither staves nor scrip, neither bread, neither money.

Mar. And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey,

Save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no mo-
ney in their purse:

Mar. But be shod with sandals: and not put on two coats.
Luke Neither have two coats a piece.

4 LukeAnd whatsoever house ye enter into,

There abide, and thence depart.

Mar. And he said unto them, In what place soever ye enter into an house,

There abide till ye depart from that place. 5 Luke And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city,

Shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.

Mar. And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence,

Shake off the dust under your feet, for a testi

mony against them.

Mar. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.

Mar. And they went out and preached that men should repent.

And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them. 6 Luke And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel,

And healing every where.

Sect.59. John Baptist is put to death by Herod in Tiberias. Mat. At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame

of Jesus.

Mar. And king Herod heard of him (for his name was spread abroad).

Luke Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done
by him:

Luk. And he was perplexed, because that it was said of
some, that John was risen from the dead: And of
some, that Elias had appeared: and of others, that
one of the old prophets was risen again. And Herod
said, John have I beheaded; but who is this of whom
I hear such things? and he desired to see him.
Mat. And said unto his servants, This is John the Bap-
tist, he is risen

From the dead, and therefore mighty works de
shew forth themselves in him.

Mar. And he said that John the Baptist was risen

From the dead, and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.

Mar. Others said, that it is Elias. And others said, that it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets. But when Herod heard thereof (or rather them), he said, It is John whom I beheaded, he is risen from the dead. Mat. ror Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him

In prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's
wife.

Mar. For Herod himself had sent forth and laid Hold upon
John, and bound him

In prison for Herodias sake, his brother Philip's
wife;

Mar. For he had married her.

Mar. For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife.

Mat. For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to
have her.

Mar. Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and
would have killed him, but she could not. For He-
rod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and
an holy, and observed him, and when he heard him,
he did many things, and heard him gladly.
Mat. And when he would have put him to death, he fear-
ed the multitude, because they counted him as a
prophet.

Mat. But when Herod's birth-day was kept,

The daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod.

Mar. And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birth-day made a supper to his lords, high captains, and chief estates of Galilee:

And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod, and them that sat with him;

Mar. The king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee,

Mar. And he sware unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of

me,

I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom. Mat. Whereupon he promised with an oath,

To give her whatsoever she would ask. Mar. And she went forth, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? and she said, The head of John the Baptist,

And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou give me by and by in a charger, the head of John the Baptist.

Mat. And she, being before instructed of her mother, Said, Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger.

Mat. And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath's sake,

And them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her.

Mar. And the king was exceeding sorry, yet for his oath's sake,

And for their sakes which sat with him, he would not reject her.

Mar. And immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought :

And he went and beheaded him in the prison. Mat. And he sent

And beheaded John in the prison.,

Mat. And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel,

And she brought it to her mother. Mar. And brought his head in a charger, and gave it to the damsel,

And the damsel gave it to her mother.

Sect. 60. The apostles return to Capernaum. In the de-
sert of Bethsaida the people are fed by miracle,
the first time. (See § 69.)

Mar. And when his disciples heard of it, they came
And took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb.

Mat. And his disciples came,

And took up the body and buried it,

Mat. And went and told Jesus.

Mar. And the apostles gathered themselves together unto
Jesus, and told him all things,

Both what they had done, and what they had
taught.

9 10 Luke And the apostles, when they were returned, told him

All that they had done.

Mar. And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while; for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.

Mat. When Jesus heard of it, (viz. the Baptist's death),
